Southend& District Table Tennis League    2015-6 Winter Season

Week 6 REPORT, Week Commencing 26th October 2015

Premier Division – DRS – Duncan Taylor         Duncan.Taylor@essex.gov.uk

Week 6    The consistent Thorpe Bay B line-up of Skeggs, Bhambra and Stubbington brushed aside Warehouse A 8-1 this week, with Martin Turner beating Gurj Bhambra for the sole Warehouse point. It was the same scoreline when Rawreth C came up against Thorpe Bay A with the Thorpe Bay side coming out on top.  There was a fine win for Mike Hayes in his first season back in the top flight against Paul Sayer.  A strong Rawreth B side came up against the even stronger Hullbridge A side of Kevin Caldon, Stuart Gibbs and Adam Brewer who were in great form, winning 9-0 without dropping a set.  There won’t be many times this season when Rawreth B are beaten by such a scoreline.  Man of the Match Reece Seddon was the difference as he led his Rawreth D side to a 5-4 win over Hadleigh Forum.   Reece won all his games and was ably supported by teammates Ciaran Whelan and Chris Aukett who both won one each.  There was an equally tight affair as Rayleigh Mill edged out Castle Point 5-4, with Minda Sinkus in fine form taking three wins for the Millers.  There were excellent wins for the Castle Point pair of Simon Jacob and Dave Page over Peter Radford.  Rawreth A blooded a new player this week, Ross Saxby, who contributed two wins on debut against Hullbridge B’s experienced campaigners Fred Dove and John Holland. The match of the night came in game 9 when Tony Halling edged out Richard Hutchinson 11-6 in the 5th end, to preserve his 100% winning record    Duncan

Week 6    Customs A still lead the table following a 7-2 win over Lentern E. Roy Thomas led the way with a maximum with two each from Dale Gutteridge and Brian Rackham, neither of whom could get the better of Phil Puckey.  Hockley A are a point behind having won by the same scoreline, 7-2, away to Runnymede. Tim Pang was unbeaten with two each from Matt Nariel and Matt Stringer, Philip French beating both the youngsters for the Runnymede points.  Hullbridge C eased into third, but did not have it all their own way with a 5-4 victory over Rawreth E in a match where no-one was unbeaten. Pete Saunders and Jan Fuller scored two for the Hullbridge team whilst Gary McCarthy and john Blackman scored two for Rawreth. It was left to Andy Seaman to get the extra point for Hullbridge against Dave Barnes who was playing up.  Canvey A found their ‘A’ game against Warehouse B providing a clean sweep 9-0. POTM, Terry Giddens, Ray Wilson and Peter Cray starring for the successful team.  Hadleigh Forum B had a good 7-2 win over Lentern C, with Tony Mace picking up the POTM award playing up from the C team and remaining undefeated. Mick Tappenden and Anthon Ranjit-Singh added two each for the victory.  In the last match this week the two promoted teams met for the first time. Hockley B edged the match 5-4 over Invicta A to win only their second game of the season. Keith Abbott picked up the POTM which was hard-earned winning all three of his games, two of which were won in the fifth set, 17-15 against Neil Daines and 11-9 against Barrie Murphy which swung it in favour of the Hockley team    Barrie

Week 6    In a spooky Halloween case of déjà vu, Castle Point B and Canvey B both posted 9 – 0 wins again this week. It was made easier for Castle by visitors Hockey C being only able to muster two players. (Bats!). Meanwhile Canvey cast a spell over home side Warehouse C. In both these matches, it will come as no surprise to mention it was both sides’ old guys (gouls?) who were undefeated – Martin Roberts, Tony Ayliffe and Keith Neville for Castle and Talbot Wiseman, Des Duffield and Tony Westwell for Canvey.  With leaders Hullbridge D not having a match this week, these results have made the top of the division much more interesting, with all three teams separated by only three points, having now played the same number of matches.  RESSC were generous hosts to Wakering, allowing their visitors to leave with a 6 – 3 win. A wizard maximum from Wakering’s Cliff Noakes did most of the damage, whilst Stuart Mill’s added two wins. Robert Skews two successes and one from Sarah Mapes, ensured the home side had some pickings.  A close encounter took place when Rawreth F entertained Basildon Hospital. Two victories for Kevin Smart and Mike Smith, with a first win of the season for Gill Smith, bewitched the home side in a 5 – 4 away win. Adam Hill and Jan Thorpe recorded two wins for Rawreth.  The same 5 – 4 score (but this time in favour of the home side) was the outcome in the match between Canvey C and Warehouse D. Canvey ghosted past their visitors, thanks to a maximum from Geoff Banthorpe. It was a scary wait for the win though, with Gordon Johnstone edging the fifth set of the last game against Phil Marble to snatch the win    David

Week 6    There must have been an awful lot of Halloween parties last week the preparations for which have obviously delayed people sending their results in! Only two matches to report on which is a bit disappointing.  At the top of the table Invicta B are currently 7 points clear of Hullbridge G after a crushing 9-0 victory against Hockley F. John Golding, Mike Keeble and Chris Gregory (playing up from the C team), were too strong for the Hockley team of David Chenery, Claire Stringer and 12 year old Alex Summers who was making his debut in the League. David almost rescued a point for Hockley losing out in a 5 set marathon with Chris, who lost the first two sets before winning 9/11 21/23 11/3 12/10 11/7. John Golding took the man of the match honours.  Hullbridge F have moved into 4th place having won all 3 of their matches so far, the latest being an 8-1 home win against Warehouse E. Paul Ogden and Bob Shingleton-Smith both recorded hat-tricks and Janet Finch a brace, with Mike Webb rescuing the point for Warehouse. Mike was also unlucky not to pick up a second win being 2 sets to one up against Bob but lost the last two sets 11/7 11/2.  At this early stage of the season the top 4 of Invicta B, Hullbridge F and G and Canvey D, look to be the stronger teams by far in this division and the promotion places will surely be taken by two of these    Paul
