The Aberdeen Team put in a great performance at the Scottish Ping Pong Championships last weekend. As in previous years, event took place at the Ward Road Gym in Dundee. Three ADTTA players took part in the Championships: Catherine Inverarity, Charlie Matthew and Gregor Ksiazek.
In our local tournament earlier this year, Catherine made it to the semi-finals. In Dundee, unfortunately, she found herself in the most challenging group along with Ian Johnston and Gordon Muir.
Chalie won his group (Group 2) as well as did Gregor (Group 3). In the quarterfinals, Charlie defeated Jamie Toner, a promising young player who knocked out Andrew Nimmo in the qualifying round. Also in the QFs Gregor managed to get past Gordon Muir who was Group 1 runner-up. Charlie, ADTTA Ping Pong Champion three years running and Gregor met in the semifinals and there could only be one outcome to this match.
In the final against Ian Johnston, Charlie gave a great show of his abilities but it just wasn't enough to get the Ronnie Turnbull Quaich trophy this year. Despite this, Charlie put in a great fight and was the first ADTTA player to reach the final of the Scottish Ping Pong Championship. Congratulations Charlie!
In the afternoon there was a doubles sandpaper tournament. Six teams entered the group stage (2 groups of 3) and the winners of each group met in the final. Charlie Matthew & Andrew Nimmo team beat Ian Johnston / Charlie McGowan duo. All things considered, Charlie Matthew couldn't ask for a better outcome. At the end of the day he had singles runner-up trophy, an award for the doubles title and a brand new sandpaper bat Juliet Johnston presented him when he was getting ready for a trip back to Aberdeen.
