ADTTA Rated Tournament 2022ADTTA Rated Tournament, Garioch Sports Centre, 18th September 2022

All 24 players registered for the event turned up before 10am this morning at Garioch Sports Centre in Inverurie for 5 hours of competitive table tennis. It was the first ADTTA tournament since North Confined back in April and a good test of skills and preparation before start of 2022-2023 season.

Rated tournament is a new format that we've decided to try out and we hope to run this type of event at least once a year - more often if there is a demand. It's worth mentioning that we've used Garioch Sports Centre for the first time (as a venue for the tournament) and we're heard lots of positive feedback regarding the set-up, available space and quality of lighting. All in all, everything went according to plan and we've managed to complete all matches 10 minutes before the end of our time slot. Big thanks to everyone for keeping pre-match knock-ups to a minimum and maintaining steady progress in each group throughout the day.

ADTTA Rated Tournament 2022 RESULTS

And here is a brief recap of what transpired during our first rated tournament.

BAND 1

Ilona Obst-Wojcicka, number 1 seed of ADTTA Rated Tournament, had struggled to get her game going and lost to Craig Cummine and Gregor Ksiazek. Craig earned lots of points from his quality high-throw service and only other Triagle members seem to be able to return it fairly consistently. Brian Roberson mustered a come-back of the year: he was 2-10 down in 3rd end against Craig before he got into the "zone". Brian won this end 13-11 with some absolutely amazing combination of FH topspins, blocks and placement. Ikenna Asogwa, before appearing in the last match of the group, had only one defeat (against Ilona) with good prospect of winning the tournament. But it didn't quite click and it was 3:0 before Ikenna could fine-tune his deadly FH/sidespin loop. At the end, Gregor Ksiazek topped Band 1 with 5 wins.

BAND 2

Andy Keith confidently won his group, dropping only 1 end (against Robbie Martin) throughout the day. Rob Tanner came second, stealing the spot from Chris Davenport. Rob and Chris had a pretty challenging 5-setter with first end being 14-12 to Chris and third end 16-14, also to Chris. Robbie Martin, youngest among Band 2 players, did really well, beating two higher rated players (Kostas and Sena) and seriously rattling Rob Tanner by taking him to the 5th.

BAND 3

It wasn't a good day for Ian Hope. Despite being seeded 1st, he had to recognize the strength of his opponents, finishing the tournament without a win. Still big thanks to Ian, who traveled from Cullen, for making that trip and joining the event. You'll get them next time! Przemyslaw Szum, who moved to Aberdeen recently and started training at CTM, managed to overpower all Band 3 contestants and topped the group with 5 wins. Well done to Maja Wojcicka as well! She has certainly made a substantial progress during the summer. She only lost to Przemyslaw and it was 9-11 in the 5th.

BAND 4

Andrew Milne, who recently started attending table tennis sessions at Baden Powell Centre in Turriff, had a great day winning all his matches in Band 4. Obinna Ugoala was seeded 2nd and he managed to retain that ranking. Lauren Diack, who came third, was the only player who challenged Andrew's dominance taking him to the 5th end and only narrowly loosing that one 9-11.
