Andover Advertiser Report 12-10-15

The first week of the season got off to a busy start at John Hanson School, in spite of one team dropping out. With every game counting towards the result, concentration was difficult to achieve.

In Division 1 last season’s champions got off to a good start, but were given a surprise by newcomers Hanson Leopards, before winning 27 - 9. As usual Malcolm Cummins (Tigers) won three, but Andy Snellgrove only won two, as his opponent Mike Jones (Leopards) had to scratch due to an eye problem. Mike beat Jerry Holt, as did James Clark who recorded an excellent win 11-9, 6-11, 10-12, 13-11, 5-11. Jerry eventually won one when he held on to defeat Peter Dyson 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-7.

Last season’s runners up Hanson Pumas look a very strong team when recording a 30 – 0 victory over last season’s Div2 winners Hanson Panthers, who unfortunately only had two players. Andy Whitcher, Justin & Eddie Shoemark all won three each for Pumas.

Hanson ‘A’ had a solid 26 – 11 victory over Hanson Jaguars, thanks to three from Dan Geary and two each from Peter Henderson & Steve Rollason. The doubles proved to be a hard fought set with Peter & Dan just managing to beat Trevor Whitelock & Sue Purton 11-6, 7-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7. Trevor managed to win two for Jaguars, but had to work hard to overcome Steve 7-11, 11-8, 12-10, 10-12, 10-12.

Hanson Cougars went down 14 – 28 to Figheldean who had in form Phil Cook & Brian Cook both winning three. Chris Stockdale, who was making a comeback for Cougars, was unlucky to only win one, as he went down in five games to both Phil & Brian.

The best match of the week was between Hanson Pidgeons and Hanson Lions in Division 2, which resulted in a close 18 - 23 win for Lions. Mike Bonarius won three for Lions, Darren Walkom won two and Ross Walkom playing in his first league match, managed a 12-10, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 3-11 win over Adam Shears. Simon Przeklasa (Pidgeons) won two, but only just managed to defeat Darren 7-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7. Nathan Shears (Pidgeons) just beat Ross 11-7, 5-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5 for his only win.

Unfortunately a two man Test Valley ‘A’ team went down 5 – 27 to Hanson Falcons. Jason Cullip and newcomer Simon Prosser both won two for Falcons, with Val Fox adding a single win. The youngsters from Test Valley, who are playing in the league for the first time, put up a good fight with Chris Melville recording a good win over Val 13-11, 11-5, 11-5.

Hanson Kestrals went down 11 – 23 to the experienced team of Enham, despite only having two players. William Cooper recorded a excellent three wins for Kestrals, whilst young Daniel Abbott just missed out on a first win, losing to Patrick Baker 6-11, 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 9-11. Patrick, Roy Horner and Pete Farmer all won one each for Enham.
