Andover Advertiser Report 07-12-15

The quarter final matches this week in the Advertiser Cup, which is a team handicap competition, produced some excellent results.

Div 1 Hanson Pumas recorded a second convincing 1 – 8 away win over their Div 2 opponents Test Valley ‘A’, which considering they were giving away an average of nearly 26 points per game (average -10 to their opponents +16 start) this was an amazing result. Again Eddie Shoemark and Richard Fettes won all three for Pumas, but Richard only just managed to overcome Chris Melville (TV ‘A’) 21-19, 20-21, 17-21. Chris was the ‘A’ teams only winner when he defeated Justin Shoemark 18-21, 21-14, 21-16.

Figheldean of Div 1 surprisingly lost 4 – 5 to Hanson ‘Pidgeons who only had two players, so started the match three sets down. Whilst giving away an average 13 points per game Figheldean could only manage a solitary win when Brian Cook beat Nathan Shears 21-10, 1-21, 21-14. Nathan went on to win two, with younger brother Adam Shears winning all three to clinch the match for Pidgeons.

Another Div 1/Div 2 clash saw Hanson Cougars defeat Hanson Lions 5 - 1. Cougars had to give away an average of 12 points per game, but thanks to Gerry Vaughan and Nick George who won two each and Chris Stockdale who got one, they managed a surprising win. Ross Walkom did manage to claw one back for Lions when he beat Chris 19-21, 6-21, but this was unfortunately not enough.

Two Div 1 teams contested this match, with Hanson Jaguars losing to Hanson Panthers 2 – 6. Jaguars had to surrender an average of 8 points per game and this proved too much for them. James Taylor, Dave Broomfield and Matt Carter all won two each for Panthers, but James was unlucky to lose to Trevor Whitelock (Jaguars) 16-21, 21-16, 21-17, whilst Matt just held on to beat Graham Audin 12-21, 21-18, 17-21. Trevor did his best for his team and remained undefeated having won two out of two.
