Andover Advertiser Report 17-10-16

The first week of the season got off to a busy start at John Hanson School and whilst the top sides all won, the lower teams showed a lot of fighting spirit, producing some creditable results.

In Division 1 last season’s runners up Figheldean recorded a sound 23 – 14 victory over Hanson Jaguars, thanks to three wins for Lionel Coles, two for Brian Cook and just one for Julie Dean. Clive Hacker managed two for Jaguars, whilst Trevor Whitelock got one and with Sue Purton took the doubles.

Hanson ‘A’ got off to a very good start with a 30 – 4 win against Hanson Panthers, thanks to three each from Dan Geary, Peter Henderson and Steve Rollason. Steve had to work hard though against Colin Shepperd, before winning 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4.

Hanson Cougars had to play last years Div 2 champions 3D’s and were pleased to record a 28 – 10 win. Tony Brown, who was playing his first game for Cougars won three, as did Nick George. Gerry Vaughan (Cougars) was unlucky to only win one, as he went down in five games to both Nicky Downs and Mark Pettengell. Mark played very well on the night, but having come back twice against Gerry to win, he managed to lose after being 5-0 up in the fifth game to Nick.

The best start to the season was by Test Valley Penguins against Enham in Division 2, which resulted in a 10 - 27 win for Enham. However, Penguins proved that they had learnt a lot from last season and gained more points from this one match than they had managed in any match last year. This was thanks to two good wins for Alex Dennis (Penguins), firstly against Tom Farmer and then defeating Patrick Baker 11-5, 6-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8. Penguins captain Annabelle Anderson also played very well and was unlucky to lose 6-11, 14-16, 11-9, 11-8, 8-11 to Tom. Roy Horner is still going strong for Enham and won his three, helped with two each from Tom Farmer and Patrick Baker.

Newcomers Hanson Eagles went down 7 – 28 to last seasons runners-up Hanson Pidgeons, despite only having two players. Nathan Shears and Adam Shears both won two for Pidgeons, whilst Daniel Abbott won one, having lost to Yannick Rachel 11-8, 12-14, 11-7, 11-4. The doubles proved a hard match for Nathan & Adam Shears who were unbeaten last year, but they just managed to win 11-9, 7-11, 12-14, 12-10, 4-11.

Hanson Lions got off to a great start with a 30 – 3 defeat of Hanson Vultures. Mike Bonarius, Darren Walkom and Ross Walkom all won three for Lions. However, Ross only just clung on to beat Brian Dyke (Vultures) 11-6, 5-11, 5-11, 11-8, 9-11.

Hanson Falcons recorded a 27 – 4 result against the newcomers Hanson Crows. Brian Fox and Simon Prosser both won three for Falcons, with Val Fox getting two. The youngsters of Hanson Crows, who are playing in the league for the first time, put up a good fight with Jack Tucker recording a good win over Val 11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 11-4.
