Ashford & District Table Tennis League: Week 3 – Division 3

Three weeks into the season and Division 3 is already turning into a two horse race.  This week is was very much the ‘Ruckinge’ show with 20 points on offer, Ruckinge teams took full points.  Ruckinge C are currently sitting at the top of the league with a healthy nine point lead.  Promoted from Division 4 last season this side look like favourites for the title with this week’s 10-0 victory over the juniors (and Bob Young) of Ashford C.  In an extremely one sided affair Clive Devlin, Terry Yeomans, and Daniel Simmons showed the practice in the summer was paying off with the home side losing just three legs over the course of the evening.  Ashford TT C are a young side, and I suspect in the reverse fixture the juniors will be a much stern challenge but this time out Max Behrens and Spencer Hewins had to settle for a leg each off Clive Devlin, with Max and Bob Young also winning a single leg over Daniel and Terry in the doubles.

Elsewhere the points were shared between Ruckinge D & Ruckinge E, with early indications being that the race to the bottom will be between Ruckinge E and Ashford C these could be import points.  Ruckinge E started brightly with Alan White brushing aside an improving Simon Dale, but Simon need to improve by more than a point a leg to win this one (11-5. 11-6, 11-7).  Ruckinge D then started a run of three games in succession with Colin Bingham winning 3-0 over Ray Quinn, and the awkward Brian Kennett confusing Paul Hickman with his unique style and winning 3-0.  Then followed a tight affair between long serving league players with Colin and Alan sharing the first four legs 7-11, 11-3, 13-11, 7-11 before Colin was able to pull away in the final leg to take the victory 11-5.  With Ruckinge D now 3-1 up it was up to Pau l Hickman to try and pull Ruckinge E back into contention, and he duly dispatched Simon Dale three straight, before Brian Kennett the two game advantage 4-2 by beating Ray Quinn 3-1.  Then Ruckinge E’s man of the night Paul Hickman pulled his side back within 1 by beating Colin 3-1.  Colin started brightly winning the first 11-9, before Paul started to turn the screws winning the next three legs by ever greater margins.  That however was the last singles win of the night for Ruckinge E, with Brian Kennett beating Alan White 3-0, and Simon Dale beating Ray Quinn in five to leave Ruckinge C 6-3 up with just the doubles to play.  But Ruckinge E are the reigning Division 3 doubles winners, and their experience showed as Alan White & Paul Hickman took a vital win over Simon Dale and Brian Kennett to keep the score to 6-4.

With only two matches being played in Division 3 this week it left Little Chart Posties with a lot of ground to make up in their game in hand.
