QUARRENDON WIN THEIR FIRST FRANK MITCHELL

match score card below

This year’s handicap final was played at Bierton Sports Centre between last year’s runners up, Quarrendon and Sports G, Division Two Champions. Quarrendon from Division Three enjoyed a start of 168 points needing to score 12 points in each leg to ensure victory. Captain Craig Saunders took on Division Two’s top player, Alan Shaw in the first game taking 26 points and giving his team a strong start. Young Tom Ludlow then faced veteran Pete Edwards and played an extremely good game taking 35 points over two legs with some carefully placed hitting. Mark Pierce for Quarrendon played Andy Templeton and won both legs putting the Sports Team well behind the required rate. At this point Sports had managed to reduce the difference to 151 points. Alan Shaw restored the balance to 122 points with a strong win against Tom but then Craig upset the odds by winning the second leg against Andy. Craig’s forehand was on fire in this and the final leg against Pete. With Tom winning an unexpected 27 points against Andy Quarrendon had won the match with two games still to be played. Overall the Quarrendon Team came determined to gain retribution for their loss in the final last year putting the Sports Team on the back foot in nearly all the games. Player of the night for Quarrendon was Craig with 108 points but Mark turned the tide with the win in the third game and Tom maintained the advantage with 75 points won. Alan Shaw was outstanding for Sports.

Well done to Quarrendon for their first major win to cap a very strong season long performance. Many thanks go to Bob Sargeant for providing the venue for the League with a warm welcome and an enjoyable evening.

Quarter Final report

Last year's finalists, Quarrendon, overcame Haddenham E to go into the semi finals with excellent performances from Craig Saunders and Mark Pierce. Tom Ludlow supported well to protect their 82 point lead. David Simpson for Risborough B outperformed David Bradbury for Bucks in the last rubber and actually won the first leg 21-11. The second leg went to David Bradbury 21-19 but the damage inflicted in the first leg was enough to give Risborough a 9 point win. Brill proceeded strongly into the semis with Neil Turton outstanding against Longwick A. The remaining fixture is to be played on 21 March.

Frank Mitchell First Round

The round was disappointing with the number of forfeited matches (4) and matches where two players turned up for teams (2). In other matches some teams played weaker sides and lost by virtue of a handicap based on the strongest team – Haddenham A V Haddenham B, Haddenham D v Haddenham E, Longwick B v Brill. Of the remainder Sports E squeaked past Tring C where some brilliant play was seen by youngsters Dom Palmigiano, Josh Edworthy, Charlie Robinson, William Claridge-Hanson and Alfie Lyon. Bradley was also stretched by the Tring trio but Josh did enough in the final leg for Sports to prevail by 9 points. It was disappointing for Tring but a good advertisement for table tennis. Bucks A just failed to pull back 206 points at Risborough B where David Simpson took the first leg against Paul Rickard and was arguably Risborough's best player. It was not decided until the final leg, David v Stuart Brewer with David needing 5 points to win the match. This he did in the first set with the overall win coming out at 13 points. Sports G won comfortably at Bucks E (37points) and Quainton B were equally comfortable winning by 59 points against Rivets A. Two matches have been postponed due to a burst pipe at the Sports Pavilion.
