Another excellent nights table tennis took place, with some outstanding young talent on show. The ability of some of the players, particularly in the under 13 event where players aged 10 and 11 were competing is a testament to the effort and time being put in by Eric Barlow and those involved in the coaching scheme over the last few years. Many of these players are destined to have a bright future in the game.
As expected the junior (U18) event was dominated by the top 2 seeds, Toby Dow and Ethan Morgan. Played in a round robin group, the pair came through their first 3 games both undefeated to set up what was in effect the final in the last game of the group. With Dow playing well, and Morgan not matching recent performances it was Dow who took the game and the junior title with a comfortable 3-0 win. James Lewis finished 3rd, ahead of Ethan and Lilli Foreman.
In the cadet singles Dow and Morgan both came through their groups in straight sets, and were joined in the semi-finals by youngsters George Fyfe and Joseph Fisher. As expected the top two seeds came through in straight sets to set up another final. Morgan defeating the talented Fisher, and Dow beating Fyfe both in straight sets despite excellent performances from the two youngsters.
In the U13 event all players were making their debut in the tournament, but some of the games were of the highest quality. Top seed Fisher won his group to set up a semi-final with Sofia Pouyanne-Daza, wo had progressed by the tightest of margins against Liam Callaghan. Fisher progressed to the final with a 3-0 win. The other half of the draw saw brothers George and Archie Fyfe meet in the semi-final. A tight game was expected and this is what the pair delivered. George took an early lead but Archie fought back to take the 1st set in deuce, and then eased in to a 2-0 lead. George however, took an easy 4th set and the pair traded points in the 4th set from the off but Archie inched ahead and took the game 11-9 to secure his place in the final.
Many thanks to all that helped on the evening, particularly Andrew Hook, Eddie Tait, Nigel Green and Fiona Dow for scoring all of the games.
