Hussain wins Cadet 6 Nations gold!

England’s Amirul Hussain won the gold medal at the Cadet 6 Nations in Germany, with a silver for Ruby Chan and a bronze for Josh Weatherby.

After the medal-winning exploits of England boys and girls in the team events, attention turned to the individual competitions.

Five English players made it through their groups – Jasmin Wong and Darcie Proud were the others – but it was Hussain who took pride of place.

Having won all five group matches, losing only two games in the process, he defeated Gabrielius Camara of the Netherlands 3-1 in the quarter-finals and Germany’s Karl Zimmermann 3-0 in the semis.

Weatherby won five group matches out of six, losing only to Zimmermann, and he overcame another German, Vincent Senkbeil 3-0 in the quarter-finals. His was then defeated 3-2 in the semi-finals by Mattis Naslund of Norway, who went through to face Hussain in the final.

The pair had already met in the groups, with Hussain winning 3-0, and the outcome was the same in the final though this time it was 3-1 in the England athlete’s favour.

In the girls’ event, Wong won five matches out of six in the groups but was eliminated 3-0 in the quarter-finals by the host nation’s Katharina Bondarenko-Getz. Proud, having won four out of five in the groups, then went out 3-2 to Norway’s Martine Toftaker.

Chan, who got out of the groups with three wins out of five, beat Germany’s Sarah Rau 3-2 in the quarter-finals and Toftaker 3-1 in the semi’s to get through to face Josefina Haagensen of Denmark in the final.

They had also met in the group stage, with Chan victorious 3-2, but this time the scoreline was reversed as Haagensen took the gold.
