The cup competitions took centre stage in the Bath and
District Table Tennis League last week. There were no real surprises in the
Restricted Cup (for teams outside the Premier Division) but Batheaston B came
close to repeating their win over higher division Newbridge in last season’s
competition, just losing out by five games to four. Chris Sharpe carded a
double, and Phil Gentle and Norman Thomas won a game each for Batheaston, but
they were outdone by pairs from Gary Sartain and Brian White, and a single win
from Colin Dowding for the victors.
The Handicap Cup saw Newbridge involved in another close
tussle, although on this occasion they were on the wrong side of a 5-4
scoreline against Bathford D. Mark Davis took the plaudits for the winners with
a treble, and Cyril Case and Tony Parr added a game apiece. Doubles from Gary
Sartain and Colin Dowding were not enough for Newbridge.
