Having come through the Avon County Finals and the South-West Region zone finals of the Butterfly English Schools Team Table Tennis Championships , the Batheaston Primary School table tennis team headed off to Bournemouth for the South of England finals on Saturday 21st March with high hopes.
Despite an exciting 5-3 win against the Midlands' Fareham Common School, Batheaston were unable to match London's Barnes School and the South-East's Amherst School, losing 2-6 to both. The boys from Batheaston - Leon Kashdan-Brown, Cal Levitt, Sky Jones and James Erickson - finished in a respectable third place but only the winning London team will progress to the National Finals in May.
For a small village primary school, the boys' long run in this competition against much larger schools from around the country exceeded all expectations and the boys have learnt a great deal about competitive play and have developed a lasting passion for the game. All four now regularly attend the junior table tennis club at St. Marks School in Bath on Thursday evenings and look forward to future competitions for their respective senior schools at the older age groups.
