Club Competition 29-07-21

The final round of matches in the club competition provided everything the organisers could have hoped for as the top two teams met with the title in contention right up until the last ball was hit.

Leaders Rose & Two Thorns met TT Allstars knowing that a 4-5 defeat would give them the title and a 3-6 defeat would leave the two level on points, sets and matches won with the title decided on games won. Despite going 0-2 down, Allstars defied the odds to win 7-2 with all nine sets going to three games meaning Allstars took the title by a point as R&TT missed the bonus point they needed.

Tony Catt and Rose Rainton gave R&TT the lead only for Arthur Bracken (3) and Roy Funnell and James Gorridge (two each) to reel off seven wins in a row. Every contest was in the balance but, in the end, Gorridge faced Sheila King, scraping home 9-11, 11-7, 12-10.

Ball Bashers beat Bats Atoxic  8-1 with Kevin McEwan and Ryan Heselden unbeaten and two wins for Emily Koester. This left the Bashers level on points with R&TT but winning one match less. The organisers will be providing them with runner-up trophies, considering this as equal second place.

Graham Gillett’s maximum led Ivory Rose to a 6-3 defeat of Winter Mixtures with Pete Robinson winning two, as did Roger Pingram for the losers. The bonus point picked up by Mixtures meant they pipped Ivory Rose to fourth place by a point.

Going Down beat Slovakquickdust 5-4 with Sue Pingram winning three and John Ellis two while John Bradbury picked up two for the Slovaks.
