WK 3 Report 22-23

Bexhill H had their first win in Division One of the Hastings Table Tennis League when they beat Bexhill A 7-3, with Rob Warner, Ryan Warner and John Bradbury all winning twice. Player of the match though was the A side’s Martin Kellaway with a fine maximum. Kellaway, who has been plagued by back problems in recent years, edged past both Warners in five games.

Graham Gillett’s maximum helped Bexhill B secure a 5-5 draw at Tackleway A, for whom Roy Funnell  and James Gorridge both won two.  Despite the final scoreline all the individual clashes were clear cut, with most of them being won in straight games.

Early leaders are champions Academy A and their 8-2 defeat of Tackleway B was their third in three matches with Nathan Darby and Ryan Heselden both unbeaten. Nick Standen secured the fourth point for the Academics, beating Kevin Rowe but losing in five to Malcolm Barber and Roger Pingram after leading in both matches.

Academy B are second, despite playing only twice, after beating Academy C 10-0. Matthew Davies was in imperious form for the B team and he, Dave Butler and James Winchester were all unbeaten. Rose Rainton and Robin Gibbs both took Winchester the distance and things can only get better for the C team.

Three of this week’s four Division Two matches took place at Bexhill on Thursday night.

Early leaders Monarchs A beat Bexhill E 8-2 with Bob Lowe and Alison Jordan both winning three and Sue Paice chipping in with one.

Academy D could afford to rest the indomitable Martin Richards and still beat Bexhill Ladies 7-3. A maximum from Andy Furnival and two from Terry Dean set Academics on their way while Pam Winter had two good wins for the Ladies.

Despite lending John Bradbury to the H team, the Bexhill D trio of Oli Matthews, Leon Hyde and Andy Hyde beat Tackleway D 10-0. Keith Lindsay provided most resistance for Tackleway and took Matthews the distance. Andy Hyde proved himself the fittest player in the club by also playing for the A team on the same night (against the H team, where he lost to his D team teammate Bradbury)

In Division Three, Bexhill F continued their winning start with an excellent 7-3 win at Tackleway E when George Reidy was unbeaten and Harvey Webb and Jim Leppard both won two. For Tackleway, Steve Milton beat Webb and Sachin Davis beat Leppard.

Academy E beat Bexhill G 8-2 with a maximum from Andy Murphy and two each from Danny Gurden and Daniel Quinn-Graham.  Dom Goodson picked up both wins for Bexhill.

Andy Holmes’ maximum was crucial in Tackleway F’s 6-4 win over Hollington C.  Chris Floyd won two for the winners, as did Phil Bailey for Hollington. Bailey may well contest this week’s fitness award with Andy Hyde – not only did all his singles go to five games, he also played doubles, which also went the distance!

Tackleway H and Tackleway G finished  5-5 with Matt Gilman winning three for the H team and John Quintos and Martin Woodward both winning twice for the D side.
