wk 4 Report 22-23

Four weeks into the Hastings Table Tennis League season and the league tables give us some early indications of which teams will be in contention for titles or relegation; with the odd exception there are not too many surprises to date.

In Division One, Bexhill H fielded some big guns to despatch Tackleway A 8-2, with Andy Norwood unbeaten and Lewis Mayhew and Faldie Adams winning two each. Arthur Bracken, still a junior, was outstanding for Tackleway, beating Mayhew and Adams and taking Norwood the distance.

Martin Kellaway has been a revelation since his return to Bexhill A and is still unbeaten after his maximum gained Bexhill a 5-5 draw at Tackleway B. John Boreham and Kevin McEwan both won two for Tackleway and McEwan, who left the Bexhill club this season, was unlucky to have to concede to Kellaway with an injury, after losing the first.

Bexhill B went down 6-4 at home to Hollington A, despite Graham Gillett’s maximum for Bexhill.  Solid teamwork from Hollington got them through with Shaun Godfrey, Ron Davenport and Kevin Barry all winning two. A doubles win for Gillett and Alan McCleave ensured the match went to the wire.

Still no sign of weakness from leaders Academy A who could afford to rest Paul Barry and still beat Academy C 9-1.  Nathan Darby and Ryan Heselden were unbeaten and Nick Standen won two while Robin Gibbs got the C team on the scoreboard with a win over Standen.

It was a quiet week in Division 2, with only two results to hand, but Bexhill D picked up a good 6-4 win at Monarchs A. Bob Lowe picked up his usual maximum for the home team, all 3-0 and conceding a mere 45 points over 9 games but two wins each for Oli Matthews, Andy Hyde and Leon Hyde proved decisive.  The only two sets not decided in straight games both involved Monarchs’ Alison Jordan who lost 1-3 to Leon Hyde but led Andy Hyde 2-1 before losing in 5 games.

Bexhill Ladies won 7-3 at Tackleway D with Pam Winter and Brian Busbridge unbeaten.

All the matches in Division Three were derbies with Bexhill F beating Bexhill G 7-3, with George Reidy winning three and Harvey Webb two for F and Dom Goodson two for G. The match swung on the two sets which went the distance, with Webb beating Cheng Liu and Jim Leppard beating Nick Smith.

Tackleway E had a comfortable 9-1 win over Tackleway G with maximums for Steve Milton and Sachin Davis and two from Josh Smith. Stuart Batchelor picked up the consolation for the losers.

The other Tackleway derby was much closer with Andy Holmes’ second consecutive maximum clinching a 6-4 win for F over H. Matt Gilman won two for the H side but the G team won all three which went the distance, two involving Holmes.
