wk 6 Report 22-23

Bexhill H continued their good start in Division One of the Hastings Table Tennis League with an 8-2 win over clubmates Bexhill B. Andy Norwood was unbeaten for the H side, all in straight games, and Faldie Adams and David Rayment both won two. Graham Gillett won both the B team’s sets, beating Rayment in a marathon ending 11-8 in the 5th and beating Adams 3-1 including a second game score of 24-22.  Bexhill H now lie second in the table, 3 points behind Academy A, having played the same number of games.

For the second successive week, Tackleway A were beneficiaries of weakened opposition as Academy C called up Andy Murphy from Division Three. Tackleway took full advantage, winning 8-2 with Arthur Bracken and Roy Funnell winning three and Mike Funnell winning two.  Robin Gibbs took a consolation for Academy and also enjoyed an excellent doubles win with Sheila King. This was to prove King’s only success despite taking both Funnell brothers the distance.

Hollington A showed more of last season’s form as they blitzed Tackleway B with Shaun Godfrey, Ron Davenport and Kevin Barry all unbeaten. Kevin McEwan almost spoiled Davenport’s night before the hard-bat man came through 13-11 in the fifth.

A quirk of the fixture list saw only one match at Bexhill on Thursday which ended 5-5 in the Division Two game between Bexhill E and Bexhill Ladies.  Richard Hoyland’s comfortable maximum kept the E team in the match with Dave Laing and Brian Busbridge both winning two for the Ladies.

Two contenders in this division met when Hollington B won 6-4 at Academy D, who were again without Andy Furnival.  Paul Hyland and Yasar Akar both won twice for Hollington while Martin Richards won two for the Academics.  Paul Hyland had a rare defeat, to Terry Dean but this was to prove Dean’s only success of the night.

Promoted Monarchs B are finding it tough in Division Two and they went down 1-9 at Tackleway D. The home side had maximums from Keith Lindsay and Jacob McCarthy and two for Thomas Mann. Peter Littley took the one win for Monarchs who can take some consolation from the fact that four of their losses went the distance.

The two unbeaten teams in Division Three continued in the same vein with Bexhill F winning 7-3 at Tackleway G with Harvey Webb and George Reidy unbeaten.

Hollington D went one better with an 8-2 win against Tackleway H with maximums from Rob Clemence and Steph Sargent but Bexhill lead the table having played one more match.

Cheng Liu had her first maximum for Bexhill G in their 7-3 win at Tackleway F.  Dom Goodson won two for Bexhill, as did Andy Holmes for Tackleway. As often happens, all four sets which went to five were won by the winning team.
