Many observers felt Colebridge Aces were favourites for the Division 1 title going into the Summer League season but Beaufort Sports A showed them they will not have it their own way in a tight encounter. A sparkling treble from Jon Ludlow forced the young Aces squad to share the spoils in a match that ebbed and flowed all evening.
In Division 2 Sutton Coldfield B and Bournville also played out a draw with ace attacker Les Minott picking up a treble for the Cadbury Boys. Roy Astle notched a brace for the home team.
Division 3 saw Beaufort B get off to winning start at Sutton Coldfield overcoming the home club’s C team 7-3 with the evergreen duo of Frank Cheshire and Ron Kite unbeaten on the night. Beaufort will take some beating at this level. The other fixture in the Division resulted in Hamstead picking up maximum points from a 9-1 victory over Quinborne in a match where the individual sets were closely fought. Gurpal Virdi and Justus Dixon won all three for the youngsters.
