Blaenau Gwent Community Table Tennis League Round 3 - 17th May 2015

In the latest round matches, the Abertillery Warriors overcame the Abertillery Tigers to maintain the 100% winning start and extend their lead at the top of the table to 4 points.  David Blake performed excellently with straight sets wins against Sam Slatter and Owen Trace, who suffered his first defeat of the season.  Sukvanth Gowda also gained a straight sets win over Sam for the Warriors and teamed up with David to win the Doubles.  Owen picked up a point for the Tigers with a 3-1 victory against Sukvanth, but the Warriors ran out comfortable winners with the final score 4-1.

Both Cwmbran teams went head to head this week.  The Bluebirds were in 2nd place after two rounds of the league and a slender 1 point above the Vikings who were in 3rd place.  The match was a close affair and ultimately came down to the doubles match to decide the overall match winners.  Vikings players Matthew Powelll and Hayden Skinner both gained straight sets wins against Bluebirds player Oliver Rogers.  However, Matthew Cullingford levelled the match with two excellent wins, including a great fightback from 2-1 down, and then 9-5 down in the fifth set, to eventually win 11-9 against Hayden.  However, the Vikings proved too strong in the doubles with a straight sets win and overall victory 3-2 to gain their 2nd win in the league and leapfrog the Bluebirds into 2nd place in the standings.

The final match saw the Abertillery Dragons face the Abertillery Panthers.  Panthers player Garin Edwards maintained his 100% singles record with wins over Iestyn Howells and Cerys Evans.  Iestyn gained victory over Panthers' Cole Hughes, recovering from losing a close first set to take a 3-1 victory.  Cole did however get a vital win for the Panthers with a close 3-1 victory against Dragons' Cerys Evans.  The doubles was an excellent match to watch with the Dragons coming out on top in five sets.  The Panthers won the overall match 3-2 to gain their first league win of the season.

The penultimate round of league matches take place on 31st May.  The Warriors will look to maintain their lead when they play the Dragons, while the Vikings take on the Tigers, and the Panthers face the Bluebirds.
