Abertillery Warriors Secure League Title - Spring League 2015

The final round of league matches took place on Friday 12th June.

League leaders Abertillery Warriors played their final match against Cwmbran Bluebirds knowing that any kind of win would seal the league title.  The Bluebirds were without Oliver Rogers co Cole Hughes stepped in to take his place alongisde Matthew Cullingford

David Blake won the first game of the match with a close 3-1 victory against Matthew.  Sukvanth Gowda then overcame Cole 3-0 to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.  Next up was the doubles match where victory would for the Warriors would seal the league title.  The first two sets were shared.  The Warriors edged the third set 11-9, and secured the win 11-5 in the fourth set.  In the reverse singles, David won a very close match against Cole 3-1, and Sukvanth beat Matthew 3-1 in four close sets to secure the 5-0 win and league title.

Second placed Cwmbran Vikings faced third placed Abertillery Panthers.  The Vikings only needed one point to secure 2nd place in the league.  Garin Edwards gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead with a 3-0 win against Hayden Skinner.  David Tiler made his league debut for the Vikings and played Ioan Edwards in his first match.  David narrowly won the first two sets 13-11 and 11-9, before Ioan won the third set 11-9.  David sealed the win in the fourth set 11-6 to level the match.  The Vikings then edged ahead in the match with a 3-1 win against the Edwards brothers in the doubles.  Garin levelled the match and kept his 100% singles record intact with a 3-0 win against David.  With the match score at 2-2, the match came down to the final game between Hayden and Ioan.  Hayden proved too strong for Ioan and claimed a 3-0 win and overall victory for the Vikings.  The Vikings finished 2nd in the league, while the Panthers finish in 3rd.

The young teams of Abertillery Dragons and Abertillery Tigers went head to head, with both teams aiming to finish the league with a second win.  It was the Dragons who came out on top winning every match 3-0 for a 5-0 victory against Tiger's Jack Baker and Sam Slatter.  Despite the scoreline suggesting a comfortable win for the Dragon's, there were some very clsoe sets which could have gone either way and the Tigers should take confidence from their performance.  Maximum points for the Dragons meant they finished in 4th place, while the Tigers stay in 6th.

So congratulations to Abertillery Warriors who are the inaugural winners of Blaenau Gwent Community League.  Deserving winners with 5 wins out of 5 in the league.  Also well done to Panther's Garin Edwards who remained undefeated throughout the season.  Well done to everyone who took part in the league over the five weeks.

There will be now be a league singles tournament which will take place on Sunday 28th June 2-4pm.
