Friday Photos 97: Some grand Nationals shots

Recently a large box of prints, slides and negatives have been passed on from Jose Ransome and these are gradually being scanned. There are such wonderful images that I thought Friday’s Photos was worth restarting, for a limited period, to share the best of the photographs with you.

Quite often the players are known but there are some gaps with some pictures. Many thanks to Jose for letting these pictures be available.

The pictures this week are all from the 1982 National Championships in Basingstoke where the Men’s Singles Winner was Desmond Douglas, the Women’s Singles was won by Carole Knight, the Men’s Doubles Champions were Paul Day and Desmond Douglas, the Women’s Doubles title went to Carole Knight and Anita Stevenson and the Mixed Doubles trophy was held aloft by Desmond Douglas and Linda Jarvis. There was also a Veterans’ event which was won by Peter D’Arcy.

All the players are known but there are several spectators who are familiar faces, amongst whom I have spotted John and Linda McDonnell from the sponsors Norwich Union, Colin Clemett, Alan Hydes, Phil Reid and Norman Reeve. Are there any more names you can add?

WS winner Carole Knight (above and below)
MS runner-up Graham Sandley
WS runner-up Anita Stevenson
MD winners Paul Day and Desmond Douglas
MD Runners-up Graham Sandley and Douggie Johnson
WD runners-up Sally Midgley, Mandy Smith
