Bolton News 19 February

Flixton Cricket Club A, still top of the table in the Premier Division of the Bolton & District Table Tennis League had a 25 – 9 win over seventh-placed Hilton A with a nine from Steve Davies. Ramsbottom Town A in second place and only ten points behind with a game in hand, had a full 27 – 4 points win against Radcliffe Cricket Club. Ryan Choong now permanently transferred to the A team to cover injuries made his debut for Ramsbottom. There is a considerable gap between the rest of the division but in third place, Ramsbottom Town B had a 23 – 12 victory over second-bottom Ladybridge A assisted by a nine from Sandy Choong. In fourth place Flixton Cricket Club B beat mid-table Nomads 18 – 12 helped by nine from Anthony Bates. Wharton helped themselves to stay out of the bottom two with a 25 – 8 win over bottom team Hilton B with nines from Barry Elliott and Dean Walmsley.

Division One’s leaders Burning Desire had the result gifted to them due to Farnworth Social Circle A’s personal problems and receive 24 points based on their average so far. Second-placed Wigan TTC played third-placed Ramsbottom Town D winning out 22 – 11 with nines from Daniel Watkinson and Paul Clark. In fifth place, Coburg had a good 23 – 10 win over Wingates two places below them, with a nine from Chris Naylor. Eighth-placed Hilton D had a 21 – 11 win over Little Lever Cricket Club B. The bottom two teams had Heaton Cricket Club A just beating Meadow Ben A 18 – 15 just one point below them helped by a nine from David Hall.

Division Two’s top team Hilton E must have had a bit of a shock when they were just pipped 19 – 18 by tenth-placed Farnworth Social Circle B with Martyn Garnett on nine for Farnworth. Second-placed Saint Paul’s Peel had an expected win over ninth-placed Hilton Top Spinners 25 – 6 with nines from Leon Smethurst and Lee Devenport. Third-placed Meadow Ben B also had an expected 25 – 7 victory as they took on the bottom team Hilton F. Nines came from John Bostock and Steven Robertson. Now having slowly slipped to fifth place, Bolton TTC B were trounced 24 – 6 by seventh-placed Brasszone assisted by nine from Phil Petts. In eighth-place Ladybridge B only just beat second-bottom Walkden Methodists 18 – 17 helped by a nine from John Birchall.

It was a battle royal in Division Three when it was the turn of the top two teams to face each other. Top team Farnworth Social Circle C played Meadow Hill A in second place. After a well-fought fight, the score at the end of the night was an equitable 16 – 16. Ben Wyatt held ground with a nine for Farnworth. Third-placed Meadow Ben C had a Derby against their own mid-table D team and ran out winners 21 – 13 assisted by nine from Ian Wheeldon. In the lower half of the table, Albany overcame juniors Hilton I 25 – 10 with a nine from Albany’s David Chadwick and Hilton H beat bottom team Meadow Hill B 24 – 6 with nines from Wes Jones and Rob Culf.
