England win final play-off matches

England finished on a high at the European Championships in Luxembourg as both men’s and women’s teams won their final matches in the Challenge Division play-offs.

The women ended in 23rd place thanks to a 3-0 victory over Lithuania, with wins for Maria Tsaptsinos, Tin-Tin Ho and Karina Le Fevre.

The men’s finishing position was 25th following a 3-2 victory over Finland. Sam Walker and Helshan Weerasinghe twice put England in front, but Benedek Olah’s two wins pulled Finland level and it was left to Tom Jarvis to secure the overall victory by beating Alex Naumi.

In the top Championship Division, the men’s final today will see Germany take on Portugal, with Slovenia and France having claimed the bronze medals. The women’s final could see a German double – they take on Romania – with bronze having been won by Netherlands and Russia.

Of the other Home Nations, Wales women finished in 28th place, ending with a 3-2 defeat by Slovakia, while Ireland men beat Estonia 3-1 in their final match to claim 31st spot.

In the Standard Division, Scotland men face Montenegro for 35th position today, while Wales play Macedonia for 39th.
