I have been trying to track down the origins of the Ken Fellingham Grouping Tournament which was originally devised to guarantee players a number of matches and, by playing in a series of small groups, entrants from all of the Bracknell and Wokingham league divisions could be ranked in order of ability.
The earliest records found are in “Table Tennis News” the Official Journal of the English Table Tennis Association. The first record, in issue No 99 December 1978, under the section on Berkshire, comments that “The first local tournament took place at Bracknell recently. Sixty-four players took part in the Ken Fellingham Grouping tournament.” A few years later, in Issue No 139, December 1983, there is comment that the Bracknell League “organised the very successful Ken Fellingham Memorial Grouping Tournament. The format of ensuring that every player gets at least 8 matches is an excellent one, and other leagues and tournaments could well benefit from this type of event”.
So the tournament has operated for at least 40 years and, in the past, has had 64 entrants. Last year it was cancelled due to the low numbers of entrants. Those that have participated know that it is a fun day and provides an opportunity for players to compete with others from all three divisions of the Bracknell league. In the initial rounds the less able can be drawn against the better players and experience the many different styles of play. As the grouping develops each player gradually moves to compete at their level and finally obtains a “Ranking”.
