Welcome to the 2015-16 Season

Chairman's Notes

Before I welcome you to the 2015-16 season we need to remember three former colleagues who sadly died earlier this year. Peter Duncombe and Maud List were elected as league Life Members because of their significant contributions to local table tennis in the league’s early years. Lynn Green was League Secretary for several years more recently. Our thoughts are with their families.

On a more positive note I would like to thank you all for electing me as a Life Member at our AGM. I regard this as an honour which I will always treasure.

This season we have increased our number of teams to 23. In the 3 Player League we have 9 teams in Division 1 and Division 2 who will again play each other 3 times on the normal league basis.

We have 5 teams in the 2 Player Division. We will again operate a normal league for the first part of the season and a handicap league for the second. Teams will play each other three times in the first part and twice in the second.

It is important that matches should be played as scheduled. If a postponement does become essential please try to fix a re-arranged date (which can be before the original match date) as soon as possible.

We hope to expand our tabletennis365 website and will continue to publish fixtures, results, individual averages and league tables. The ability to print a team’s fixtures for the entire season is particularly useful.

Please also note that:-

  1. The new plastic balls must be used in our league from this season. Unfortunately these are only available in white for now so we will have to suspend the ability of away teams to request that an orange ball should be used to aid vision until stocks of these become available.

  2. Players are requested to wear dark coloured clothing when playing all matches.

  3. All table tennis rubbers used in League play must appear on the ITTF approved list (see www.ittf.com or the link from the Table Tennis England website).

  4. All players need to be individually registered with Table Tennis England before they play league matches and can do this via the Membership section of the Table Tennis England website.

  5. We were delighted that the increased entry for our 2014/15 individual Championships enabled us to continue to run the Ladies Singles and Doubles events and hope for a repeat this season . We have a confirmed booking of 13 March 2016 for our tournament at the Dome at King Edward V1 High School, Bury St Edmunds. The entry form is included in the middle of the handbook. Entry fees have been slightly increased but the maximum cost of £10 for the day still provides very good value.

  6. Our Bury Free Press and Saffrons Shield Team Handicap competitions will again also be played at King Edward V1 High School on the Tuesdays of the weeks specified in the handbook. Both events will be on a 2 player per team basis. We will contact team secretaries in early 2016 to see if they wish to be included in the draw.

  7. We require four further League Committee members to achieve a full complement. If you are able to help please contact me or any other member of the committee (see overleaf).

  8. We will continue to submit reports to newspaper editorial teams to improve local press coverage and to attempt to attract others to take up table tennis. We have again selected one featured match per division each week which is denoted by an “R” on the fixture list and ask the home captain to provide a report to Bob Harman by e-mail.
