Thurston Spitfires 10-0 Bury Vikings
07/11/2016 - Colin Baxter
With David Unwin out of action through injury the Vikings boys knew they were going to be up against it in this match. Despite this, they showed great character and had chances to take some points from this match. Spitfires however were a bit stronger at the end of each game securing a 10-0 victory.
The best game of the night saw Dennis Morgan (Vikings) go into a 2-0 lead against Mark Cracknell (Spitfires), but Cracknell, with some solid steady play, fought back to win 3-2. Morgan also had a good game against Spitfires new boy Andy Cullen taking the first 12-10, but then Cullen got his attack going more consistently and dealt with Morgan’s threat better to take the next 3 legs 11-8, 11-8, 11-8.
Alan Brafield (Vikings) had Colin Baxter (Spitfires) on the back foot in their game taking the first leg 11-9 with some good consistent attack play. Baxter then had to dig deep to find his range and consistency taking the next 3 legs 11-8, 11-9, 12-10. Brafield also took a leg off Cracknell before losing that game 3-1.
John Waters (Vikings) also had a great chance to take the first leg off Baxter with a good lead, but Baxter managed to scrape through it and went on to win in straight sets.
Cullen & Cracknell were too strong for Waters & Brafield in the doubles to leave the Vikings sailing away with nothing to show for their efforts.
