Report on the 2009/10 Cambridgeshire Table Tennis Association
The Cambridgeshire Table Tennis Association held their Closed Championships at the Neale Wade Sports Centre in March on Saturday 20th March 2010.
In the absence of the 2008/9 champion Martin Gray due to illness, Keith Richardson completed a clean sweep of all the events he entered, which included becoming the Men’s Champion for the 19th time. Richardson from Cambridge overcame the Wisbech left hander Wayne Mason in three close games in the Men’s final. He was pushed hard in the Veteran’s final by Simon Pryke from the St. Ives Club and completed a hat-trick of wins in the Men’s Doubles with another former champion Mick Harper over Wisbech pairing Mason & Matthew Knott.
Helen Arnold from Impington became the Ladies Champion for the first time against Cambridge University’s Nga Nguyen in straight games. She also joined forces with Kayleigh Hubbard to beat Anne Chambers and Irina James in the Ladies Doubles.
County Secretary Kevin Gray paired with Janet Nicholls to claim the Mixed Doubles title with an 11-9 fifth set win against Father & Daughter Jeff and Amy Catlin.
Nicholls also managed to win the Handicap trophy when Graham Sheppard was unable to claw back the 8 point deficit in the final.
Daniel Fielding representing the Yaxley club dominated the older Boys events beating Harris Ryder in the Under 21 Constable Cup, and Rachit Vakharia in the Junior Boys event. He also claimed the Rosebowl for the Restricted Singles with a 4 set win over Dave Rowell. His fourth win of the day came when paired with Harris Ryder in the Junior Doubles.
12 year old Greta Pociate also from Peterborough, was successful in claiming three wins in the Under 21 Keki Mistry Trophy, a straight games victory over Kayleigh Hubbard, the Junior Girls Singles over Amy Catlin and the Cadet Girls Singles over Abbie Stacey from March.
Adam Jepson picked up the Cadet Boys Singles trophy with a three set win over Harris Ryder.
In the Drawn Doubles, Wayne Mason did round off a good day for himself along with Adam Saunders. They overcame Soham’s Martin Freeland and Graham Sheppard from Wisbech in a four set win, the last game of which was 22-20.
In all nearly 280 games were played on the day and the Cambridgeshire Table Tennis Association would like to thank the members of the March Table Tennis League that helped with the organisation, Carol Livermore for the catering, Florida Trophies, Speedy Bat Sports and all the players and umpires that took part in the event.
