Division two is in the spotlight this week in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. The 5-5 draw between Chelmsford C and Hatfield Peverel saw Peverel’s Dave Calleja hit top form. Calleja opened with a fine 3-0 win over Waseem Qureshi (11-7, 15-13, 11-5) and he then scored an equally impressive five game win over Mike Johnston.

Maldon A’s Trevor Lloyd - the outstanding player so far in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League tasted defeat for the first time this week. After 20 straight wins he was beaten in four ends by Liberal B’s Paul Davison (11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 8-11).

Division two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League saw a number of stand-out performances this week. Sam Lowman led the way. He impressed for Danbury D and his hat-trick enabled his team to draw against second-placed Chelmsford B.

Last year’s Champions Maldon A are in third place in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. They ran out convincing 9-1 winners against OCs A after Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden had both won their three singles encounters.

10-0 results are rare in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. However, an inform Chelmsford A powered to a convincing 10-0 win over Danbury A to go top of the table. Ryan Gooday, Eddie Ogbebor and Wal Bada were all undefeated.

The Handicap Knock Out Cup should theoretically give all sides an equal chance of winning and not surprisingly it remains the best supported of the Cup Competitions run by the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Games are still played up to the traditional 21 points as it is easier to calculate the Individual Handicaps using a “wider range” of points.

Rayne A are the 2017 Central Essex Summer Table Tennis League first division Champions. They won the title by beating Old Chelmfordians A 5-0.

George was a life member of the league and after playing table tennis briefly at Moulsham Lodge, then mainly at Rosebury, he finished playing at the Old Chelmsfordians. His wife Jean, sadly passed away last year, and George remained a regular visitor at the Old Chelmsfordians particularly on Saturday's when he watched the football. A full obituary will follow shortly.

Sadly Billericay Sports club member Brian Cole, died recently. Brian was known and respected by all who played the game during his lifetime and played in most of the local leagues including Chelmsford. A tribute from his friend and table tennis playing colleague, Alf Fox, follows.
