The Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League are saddened to announce the passing of one it’s most established players. Ev Lucas passed away on Wednesday 15 December 2021.

The young Chelmsford B side - 6-4 losers to Galleywood A the week before, redeemed themselves in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League by beating Danbury A 6-4. Saul Chivers, Harry Buckle and Charlie Craig all won twice although they all missed out against an inform Bruce Kettle.

There were two outstanding performances in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League this week. They came from players with contrasting levels of experience. Keith Adams, a regular in the Essex Veterans teams won his three singles as Danbury C lost 4-6 to runaway leaders Chelmsford A.

OCA A took a giant stride away from the relegation zone in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League by beating Chelmsford C 8-2, their first win of the Season. New signing Matthew Mulley and his equally hard-hitting brother Mark won their six singles and Robert Burton contributed a useful 8-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8 win over Mark Allaway.

Danbury D are very much in contention in the low scoring division two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and they are joint top of the table with 42 points out of a possible 70. An unbeaten Chris Buer led them to a 7-3 victory against OCA B with three good victories.

Division three doesn’t often make the headlines in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League but the most eye-catching performance went to Maldon A this week. They hammered leaders Galleywood A 9-1 to take over at the top of the table. John Holland beat Dawn Baldry in the opening game but thereafter it was Maldon calling the shots as Lloyd Bennett - Smith and Hamish Innes remained undefeated.

First division leaders Chelmsford A suffered their first defeat in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League this week, against Writtle A by a heavy 8-2 margin, in what must be one of the shocks of the Season. Writtle’s Lee McHugh scored a magnificent hat-trick beating Kim Shead (8-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-6), Gary Young (11-9, 6-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5), and Daniel Young (14-12, 11-8, 4-11, 11-9).

Division two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League looks like being very well contested. Chelmsford D lead the way with 30 points from five matches and no fewer than six more teams follow within six points. Writtle C were the week’s big winners, and the hard-hitting Gary Ward retained his 100 % singles record (12 wins out of 12) as they beat Writtle B 9-1.

Chelmsford A are setting a strong pace in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Gary Young, another new signing Matthew Mulley and James Liddiard ran out 10-0 winners against OCs A. They have 34 points out of a possible 40.

A mere three point covers the top five teams in the ever-competitive division two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. After four rounds of matches Chelmsford D top the table with 25 points, courtesy of their impressive 8-2 win over Hatfield Peverel A.

Danbury B emerged as 7-3 winners against Galleywood A in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League after a hard-fought match where no less than seven games were decided in the fifth set. Amazingly not one single game was decided 3-0.

Chelmsford A scored two emphatic wins in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League, beating Danbury A (8-2) and Chelmsford B (10-0) and they look to be the favourites to take the title. Newcomer James Liddiard and Dan Young were undefeated in both matches whilst Gary Young (who only played against Chelmsford B) was undefeated in that match.

Table Tennis has returned to the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League after the 2020-21 Season had to be abandoned following the Covid induced break. The League has retained it’s five senior divisions and refreshingly it also has three junior divisions which commence shortly.

The Chelmsford League have just learned of the death of Barry Pritchard on 27 August 2021. Barry was a well known player in both the Chelmsford League and other local leagues, most notably with the Liberal club. He was also a well-known local coach.

Barry's daughter, Deanne Rogers, has advised that his funeral, for family only, will be held on Thursday 23 September 2021 at 2.30pm at the Three Counties Crematorium in Braintree.

The Chelmsford League Committee were sad to learn of the passing of Hugh Piper in April 2021. Hugh was heavily involved in Chelmsford table tennis over several decades both as a player and administrator. A tribute from his friend, Francis Whitbread, follows.
