Writtle A complete their Season in style

Writtle A completed their Season in style in division 1A of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League by scoring a superb 8-2 win over second placed Chelmsford A. Make no mistake about it this was a top performance against a Chelmsford side containing both Wal Bada and Edward Ogbebor. Lee McHugh and Duncan Taylor were both undefeated and highlights included a 13-11, 15-17 ,11-13, 11-6, 11-9 win for Duncan Taylor over Wal Bada and an equally enthralling 8-11, 16-14, 11-8, 10-12, 15-13 victory for Lee McHugh against Wal Bada. Lee McHugh also excelled by defeating Edward Ogbebor 11-6, 13-11, 14-16, 13-11. Champions Maldon A could only field two players against Danbury A but with Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden both hitting top form they won 7-3. John Poysden impressed greatly downing the challenge of Daniel Young 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5. The records of the Maldon players for the second half of the Season are all exceptional with Alex Abbott (91 %), Trevor Lloyd (88 %) and John Poysden (75 %) all playing substantial roles in their runaway Championship win. Fifth and sixth placed sides Rawreth and OCs A drew 5-5. Paul Lucas won his three singles for the Old Chelmsfordians side which included a last gasp 8-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-4, 11-9 win against Kim Shead. Lucas has a fine record of 80 % for the second half of the Season.

Chelmsford B have claimed second place in division 1B. And they achieved this with a superb 7-3 win over Liberal. Both teams were at full strength and it was 2019 Clacton Mens Singles Champion James Denyer who led the way. Denyer defeated Paul Davison 11-9, 11-3, 11-4; Steve Pennell 11-6, 12-10, 11-8 and Adam Buxton 5-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-1, 11-4.Expect Denyer to be an integral part of the Chelmsford A squad next year. Robert Shrimpton scored an excellent 6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 win over Paul Davison. Writtle B have finished fifth. They beat Hatfield Peverel A 8-2. Paul Sturton was undefeated for Writtle whilst Alastair Piper scored a “gem of a win” for Hatfield Peverel. He beat Gary Cattermole 11-6, 11-4, 14-12. Champions Galleywood A were only able to field two players against Danbury B but they did enough to draw 5-5. Ian Whiteside defeated James Hicks 9-11, 12-14, 11-6 12-10, 12-10 in the best game of the night. Steve Kerns struggled past Gus Heath 8-11, 11-5, 11-6 11-9 to complete his hat-trick.

Hatfield Peverel D scored their fourth win of the Season in division five. Richard Drozd led the way as they defeated Hatfield Peverel E 8-2. Drozd had to pull out all the stops to beat Davina Brazier 4-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-6, 13-11 whilst Andy Simmonds was similarly hard pushed to get the better of John Kuhl 11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8.

Danbury are the 2019 Chelmsford Junior Knock Out Cup Champions. With Daniel Young in the Danbury side the Chelmsford team were always going to be up against it and Danbury duly took a 2-0 lead although they were certainly tested. Daniel Young and Ewan Hynd beat James Donald and Vinnie Kamma 11-9, 19-17, 11-9 in the opening Doubles and Luca Bailey defeated Harry Buckle 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 5-11, 13-11. Danbury had taken control and although Vinnie Kamma beat Ewan Hynd 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 Danbury ran out 5-1 winners.

Gallleywood A take division 1B title

Leaders Galleywood A lost 7-3 to Chelmsford B in division 1B of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis after a fiercely fought match. However, the three games they won means they can’t be caught and they lead Chelmsford B by 14 games with one match to play. Chelmsford came out on top of two very close opening sets. The hugely improved Victor Chan won a thrilling encounter against James Hicks 11-9, 11-8, 4-11, 5-11, 12-10 and a determined Robert Shrimpton edged out Steve Kerns 14-12, 3-11, 12-10, 12-10. With the powerful James Denyer in the Chelmsford side there was no way back for Galleywood and Chelmsford surged into a 7-1 lead. At this point Gary Brignall turned in a great display to beat Victor Chan 11-6, 11-3, 11-8 and James Hicks edged out Robert Shrimpton after an epic five ender 11-4, 9-11, 13-11, 4-11, 12-10. Galleywood had done enough - Champions !. Danbury B were in action twice. It was honours even against Writtle B. Gary Cattermole was undefeated for Writtle and he powered through his three singles beating Chris Buer (11-9, 11-4, 11-6), Ian Whiteside (11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 11-7) and Gus Heath (11-4, 11-3, 11-6). Gus Heath edged out Phil Smith 11-6, 11-4, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10 in the closest game of the evening. Hatfield Peverel A ran out 6-4 winners against Danbury B. Scott Dowsett was undefeated with wins over Chris Buer (11-5, 13-11, 10-12, 11-6), Gus Heath (12-10, 11-3, 12-10) and Neil Want (11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6).

Second placed Chelmsford A were 8-2 losers to Danbury A in division 1A. Only Tulay Dundar of their regular players was available and Vinni Kamma and Paul Nicol stood in. Paul Nicol made his mark with a fine 11-8, 11-9, 12-10 win over Peter Mynard. Vinni Kamma was far from outclassed on his top division debut and he pushed Gary Young before succumbing 9-11, 10-12, 12-10, 11-5. 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Ladies Singles Champion Tulay Dundar raced into a 2-0 lead against Daniel Young before the 2019 Burnham Mens Singles Champion reasserted himself to win 5-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-4.

Galleywood C - the division five Champions turned in a top class display to overpower OCs H 10-0. Gary Copsey, Mark Glenister and Charlie Craig carried all before them. They also beat Chelmsford H 8-2. Mark Glenister and Charlie Craig were undefeated this time although Luke Richardson showed up well for the losers with an excellent 11-9, 11-8, 13-11 win over Aidan Noguchi. OCs H were also on the wrong end of a heavy defeat against runners-up Chelmsford G - 9-1. Andy Swales and Sarah Austin were both undefeated. Stuart Wintle was on target in this match for the losers and he beat Josh Bickles in four ends (14-12, 11-7, 5-11, 11-5). Team work enabled Chelmsford J to beat Maldon E 6-4. Rev Matthews, Jacqui Smith and Taku Nerutanga all won twice to counter Denis Crapnell’s hat-trick. Jacqui Smith defeated Garry Eames 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 11-8 in the closest game of the night.

There was a first defeat for Chelmsford Cougars in CLICK division 2A. James Donald was unbeaten for the Cougars with wins over Sam Mortimer-Ford (11-9, 11-9, 11-5) and Ben Porter (11-6, 5-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-6) but Sam Mortimer-Ford and Ben Porter both defeated Sudheep Kamma in hard-fought encounters. Porter pulled through 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 19-17 whilst Mortimer-Ford won 11-8, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9. It was no surprise that the Doubles was fiercely contested and it was Sam Mortimer-Ford and Ben Porter who won in five ends 11-8, 11-13, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10. Chelmsford Jaguars ran out 5-0 winners over Chelmsford Pumas. The Pumas will have felt they deserved better losing the first three games narrowly. Josh Bickles set the ball rolling with a 11-8, 9-11, 13-11, 11-9 win over Joachin Mapes whilst Annabel Sweeney made her mark with a 13-15, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 11-5 win over Saul Chivers. Chelmsford Cougars returned to wining ways with a 5-0 victory over Chelmsford Tigers. Sudheep Kamma and Harry Chivers were both undefeated. Cameron Waite and Nicholas Grice put up a spirited showing in the Doubles before succumbing 11-9, 6-11, 5-11, 16-14, 5-11.

Another top class performance from Maldon A

Maldon A have been relentless in their pursuit of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League division 1A title this Season and they hit the jackpot this week with a 10-0 win over Rawreth. Alex Abbott, Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden were all undefeated. John Poysden prevailed in five ends against Charles Sweeny 11-7, 8-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6 in the best game of the night. Congratulations are also extended to Alex, Trevor and John who together with Peter Radford and Gill Locke were crowned County Championship Premier Division Over 60s Champions a few weeks ago in Milton Keynes, ahead of several very strong sides. Second placed Chelmsford A fell back. They were 7-3 losers to an inspired OCs A. Paul Lucas bagged a hat-trick whilst Terry Dowsett and Dan Berry both won twice. Dowsett came perilously close to winning all three singles only succumbing to Edward Ogbebor 13-11, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 11-13 whilst Dan Berry scored a superb 11-9, 11-8, 12-10 win over Casey Cross. Writtle A also hit top form and they ran out 8-2 winners over Danbury A. Duncan Taylor and Lee McHugh were both undefeated. Duncan Taylor completed his trio of wins with a widely fluctuating 11-2, 5-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 victory over fellow defender Duncan Eric Green whilst Lee McHugh had to dig deep to secure his third win against Steve Whiteley and he pulled through 10-12, 11-7, 6-11, 11-5, 11-9.

Chelmsford B moved into second place in division 1B, one point clear of Liberal A, by beating Hatfield Peverel A 8-2. Simon Jarvis and Rob Shrimpton were both undefeated. Shrimpton impressed by beating Julie Johnson 11-5, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7. The leaders Galleywood beat Liberal 6-3 in a two-a-side match. James Hicks was involved in two fiercely fought five enders. He beat Adam Buxton 14-12, 8-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-5 but lost out to Andy Huckson 11-8, 12-14, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11.

In division five Chelmsford J ran out 9-1 winners over the higher placed Chelmsford H. Victories in all three five enders helped their cause considerably. Revox Matthews fought back from 2-0 down to get the better of Jamie Dowsett 8-11, 10-12, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 whilst Peter Davenport pipped Jamie Dowsett 11-9, 6-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-8. Maldon G beat Hatfield Peverel D 7-3 courtesy of unbeaten returns from Garry Eames and Denis Crapnell. Eames completed his set of wins with a well executed 11-4, 11-7, 11-6 victory over Richard Drozd. Chelmsford G also won 7-3 to stay second. Andy Swales and Ian Austin were both undefeated.

Chelmsford Cougars made it six wins out of six by beating Chelmsford Pumas 4-1 in CLICK division 2A. James Donald was again the best player on show beating Joachin Mapes 11-4, 11-9, 11-5 and Ned Ryder 11-4, 11-5, 11-6. Chelmsford Pumas did better against Chelmsford Tigers and they won 4-1. Joachin Mapes was undefeated this time. Ned Ryder won once - a last gasp 8-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9 victory over Louis Burnett. Chelmsford Jaguars climbed into third place by beating Chelmsford Tigers 5-0. Nyree Marsh and Annabel Sweeney were both undefeated. Nyree fought back from 2-1 down to beat Louis Burnett 4-11, 11-1, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6.

West Maldon scored their sixth win of the Season in CLICK division 2B beating Buttsbury Badgers 4-1. They are five points clear of Chelmsford Leopards. Noah Sage dominated whilst Hugh Millard won once.

Chelmsford Falcons beat Chelmsford Wildcats 3-2 in CLICK division 2C. Alan Jiang led the way with wins over Emilie Guilloux (3-0) and Alesha Austin (3-1).

For those who enjoy International Table Tennis the weekend of Saturday / Sunday 18 /19 May 2019 is a date for the diaries. England Ladies play Spain and Belgium in a three way European Championships Qualifying series at the BATTS Club, Norman Booth Centre, Elderfield, Mulberry Green, Old Harlow,
CM17 0EY. The fixture against Spain is at 19.00 hours on Saturday 18 May 2019 with the match against Belgium scheduled for 11.00 hours on Sunday 19 May 2019.
