George Payne

It is with sadness Cheltenham announce the passing of George Payne.

George was an enthusiastic Table Tennis player in his youth, and liked playing against the best players, and watching the top players who he saw at Open Tournaments dating back to the 1950s'
He played in the Cheltenham league for Cheltenham YMCA from 1946. He was also a Committee official for a few years, but his main interest was in umpiring
After qualifying as a County umpire, he progressed over the years to become an international Umpire, and umpired in many English major tournaments and Championships, and some EuropeanTournaments.
He umpired at numerous Gloucestershire County matches, Cheltenham Closed Championships finals, and inter town matches.
He donated a trophy to the CTTA in memory of his first wife for the Hard Bat Singles.
For his contribution to the CTTA as a long serving umpire he was made a Vice President.
