CTTA SENIOR CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015-16
This year the tournament, with a pleasing increase in entry, was again held at the YMCA, Cheltenham TTC’s venue, on Sunday 20th March. What follows is a brief report and the results of each event.
This event produced two very high quality semi-finals, with first Sasha Grokhotov beating Li Wei (who had deposed current holder Luke Moffat in the quarter-finals) in 4 close games and then Dave Harvey beating Svilen Andreev, also in 4 close games. The final produced another outstanding match, which eventually saw Sasha lift the title after five compelling and absorbing games.
Sasha Grokhotov beat Li Wei 11-8 11-7 5-11 11-9
Dave Harvey beat Svilen Andreev 11-8 11-7 10-12 11-9
Sasha Grokhotov beat Dave Harvey 11-4 5-11 11-8 11-13 11-5
The final was predictably contested between the top two seeds, who had both reached this stage relatively untroubled.
Svilen Andreev & Sasha Grokhotov beat Dave Harvey & Luke Moffat 11-4 11-3 11-13 11-9
After a short absence, it was satisfying to be able to run this event again. And after a longer absence, it was even more satisfying to see Stella Honey return to Cheltenham and to table tennis and capture the Ladies title fairly comfortably. The closest match was that to determine the runner-up and saw Cathy Hipkiss beat Julie Taylor 12-10 in the 5th.
There was the usual strong entry for this event, where last year’s finalists were beaten in the semi-finals by this year’s top seeds. The final went the distance, with Andrew Taylor prevailing, holding off a spirited fight back by Stella Honey.
Andrew Taylor beat Keith Ferguson 4-11 11-7 11-8 11-9
Stella Honey beat Chris White 7-11 11-3 8-11 11-6 11-8
Andrew Taylor beat Stella Honey 11-9 11-9 5-11 8-11 11-9
A double for Andrew Taylor who, with Keith Ferguson, proved too strong for the ladies pairing of Stella Honey and Julie Taylor.
Keith Ferguson & Andrew Taylor beat Stella Honey & Julie Taylor 11-6 14-12 11-2
This was the 2nd holding of the event for the 18 and under 40 age group. Although the entry, as expected, was not as high as the entries for the Veterans and the Masters, it nevertheless produced a high-quality field.
Svilen Andreev beat Sasha Grokhotov 9-11 11-7 11-5 13-11
This was a repeat of last year’s final – and with the same outcome!
Dave Harvey beat Nick Mytton 11-5 11-8 11-5
This event was first contested in 1994-95 and was won by Roy Fowler. 21 years later, Roy repeated that success and regained the title.
Roy Fowler beat Doug Payne 11-6 11-5 9-11 11-6
DIVISION 1 HANDICAP SINGLES
Jon Gaskell beat Li Wei 11-8 11-4 8-11 11-3
DIVISION 2 HANDICAP SINGLES

DIVISION 3 HANDICAP SINGLES
Peter Sanderson beat Scott Johnston 11-6 7-11 13-11 7-11 11-9
Finally, the CTTA would like to express its thanks to all those involved in the organisation and running of the tournament, both before and on the day – to the YMCA for the venue, to the volunteer umpires and, not least, to the players themselves.
We hope to see you all at the Presentation and Quiz Evening on Thursday 14th April.
