Brilliantly led by England ranked player Kevin Dolder of the Barrow club, the Chester/ Ellesmere Port league open age representative team duly lifted the coveted Lancs/ Cheshire Premier division title at Garstang on Sunday for the second time in three seasons.
Over the two weekends Dolder won all his 14 games but was ably backed up at this high level of table tennis by Aaron Beech and Roumanian Florin Barbus, a relative newcomer to our league but a player of high standard as a junior, a few years ago, back in his home country.
With victories over E Lancs, Wirral, Southport and Warrington already completed in November the trio quickly faced strong rivals Bury and Oldham, but although going behind early on rallied to record 5-1 and 4-2 successes. A final 5-1 scoreline over relegated Trafford sealed the title in a competition open to 30 plus leagues in local counties.
To complete a memorable day, on adjoining tables captain Rob Wylie, accompanied by experienced Andy Eagles and University based Joe Killoran, led the A team to the division 1 title, plus promotion, with another unbeaten sequence hitting 6 wins and a 3-3 draw with Glossop. In a division that included powerful sides from Preston, Blackpool, Halton, Manchester, Halifax etc this was a tremendous performance, added to the fact that a number of the selected squad were unavailable to play on the day for various reasons.
Congratulations go to all the participating players for their achievements
