Vetrans and handicap cup report wc 20 Jan 2014

The Veterans representative first team entertained Preston in a Lancs/Cheshire Premier fixture at the Groves club and fought out a hard earned 5-5 draw.  Mark Pugh was in tremendous form and hit a terrific maximum and teammate Tomasz Haucha chipped in with a vital singles before pairing up with debutant Wayne Percival to take the doubles. Wayne has kindly signed for the remainder of the season following a terrible knee injury that befell star player Tomasz Rzeszotko at a National tournament two weeks ago.

On an adjoining table the Veterans B side struggled to contain a Kendal trio who are riding high in division 2 and only Andy Taylor and Alf Perry hit victories in a 2-8 reverse.

In the local Odex handicap cup, for the two top divisions holders, Barrow powered past Ray Worthington and his Pulford A squad and will now face Barrow B who ousted Premier outfit Corus by 31 points. Matty Gilmour was in top form for the villagers and gained in each if his singles games. In the all County Officers clash Keith Bartlett led the A side to a comfortable win over Neil Ayling and his Premier trio, and Saughall Port went down narrowly to a Pulford team led by talented Jeremy Lappin. Terry Marshall drafted in Robin Barker for Whitby Sports away match with Beechwood and Robin proved to be a match winner on the handicap awarded, and elsewhere there were victories for division 1 teams Pulford B and Groves A.

In a round 1 Sarl Williams cup match between two Groves sides Mal Turley led his B team to an 18 point success over Linda Powell and the C squad, Phil Hough just turning the tide for the division 2 team.

In a division 3 Devine Shield semi final tie Steve Tibbett led Barrow E to an exciting 6-3 victory over County Officers D  to book their place in the final in April.
