Congratulations to Shaun Hall as he retained his men's singles title at the Chester/ Ellesmere Port Closed Championships last week at the Groves club. He eased past Aaron Beech in the semi final before successfully outpointing his Newton teammate Mark Pugh in the final. Earlier Mark had played brilliantly to knock out number 2 seed and current Wirral champion, Mitchell Barker in four pulsating games. Hall and Beech teamed up to win the doubles title from Barker and Rob Wylie , the latter pair having narrowly edged out Pulford duo Simon Jones and Andy Eagles in a top quality semi.

In the veterans semis Pugh just outpointed Cheshire county player Ken Connor in 5 very close games, and Eagles did likewise against Wylie. In the final Pugh made up for his loss in the main event by taking the veterans title with some big hitting.

Lynsey Pellew-Nabbs took the ladies title defeating Linda Powell, and also teamed up with Keith Bartlett to win a thrilling mixed final from Ken Connor and Polina Petrova, 12 10 in the fifth. Mike Mercer defeated Dave Terry in 5 sets to win division 1, and Colin Fergus retained his division 2 title at the expense of Pellew-Nabbs. Brian Fitzpatrick defeated John Ashton to take the division 3 title and Pulford player Ray Worthington proved a worthy winner of the competitive over 60s event.
