The league fielded all three veterans representative teams last week in the Lancashire/ Cheshire divisions with mixed results , partly due to player unavailability. The Premier team travelled to league leaders Trafford and returned having suffered a 3 7 defeat with a win each for members Rob Wylie, Steve Green and Ken Connor.
This was the teams first setback and they lie mid table at the halfway stage. The A team welcomed Oldham A in a division 1 match and although struggling this season fought back tremendously from 1 4 down to record a terrific 6 4 victory over opponents who lie second in the table. Andy Eagles and Ray Worthington hit two wins apiece and Nev Lacey recorded a fine win over the opponents top player.
The B team travelled to Oldham for their division 2 encounter and gave a debut to Wayne Taylor of Pulford. Unfortunately the match was lost 3 7 with wins for Taylor and Keith Bartlett plus a doubles success but nevertheless an enjoyable clash .
In the local league it was handicap cup round 1 matches resulting in some close finishes. Jonathan Taylor led Barrow to a nail biting 420 - 419 victory over Groves A, Steve Sung was in top form for Groves C as they outpointed Premier side Newton A by 10 points, the visitors giving a seasons debut to County player Ken Connor, and on adjoining table Peter Cottam ensured a Groves double as they defeated Newton C by 17 points despite good play by another debutant , John Ashbrook , for the visitors.
All three County Officers teams progressed to the quarters, the first team comfortably defeating Pulford A, and the A team succeeding by 43 points at Saughall Deva. Colin Fergus ensured the B team overcame Premier side Groves with a typical fighting display and Will Sleddon backed him up perfectly.
