In the all Pulford division 1 clash Ray Worthington led the A team to an emphatic 8-2 victory over Mike Phelan and the B squad, which keeps them narrowly clear at the top from rivals County Officers A who were held to a draw by improving Groves A. In a later match the same Groves side defeated Saughall Port 6-4 despite a fine maximum from in form Paul Arrich, and John Bowen was another player to hit a maximum but failed to save Beechwood from defeat against Stan Houghton and the Pulford A side.

Chester and Ellesmere Port fielded three sides in this seasons Lancs/Cheshire competition and the first team was defending the Premier title won last year winning all seven fixtures against some very big and powerful leagues. The side was led by National Veterans ranked 4 Tomasz Rzeszotko and backed up by new signing Shaun Hall and Aaron Beech.

Division 1 action saw Hannah Winfield lead County Officers A to the top of the table following an emphatic 9-1 victory over a useful Barrow A squad with challengers Pulford A edging out previously undefeated Groves A 6-4. Robin Barker hit three wins as struggling Whitby Sports A recorded a welcome 6-4 success over John. Chan and his Pulford B side, and Barrow B and Corus C fought out an entertaining draw.

The last remaining unbeaten record in the Premier Division ended when Tomasz Rzeszotko and Milan Puchala hit maximums in an 8 -2 victory for Pulford over Barrow, and replaced them at the top of the league table.

Jeremy Lappin returned to the ranks of the Pulford team and led them to a decisive 8-2 victory over the reigning Premier division champions British Steel. He was ably backed up by Milan Puchala who only lost out narrowly to Simon Jones . Elsewhere Shaun Hall maintained his unbeaten start to the season as Corus B were held to a draw by a useful Select trio who surprisingly all defeated Lancs Vets player Brenda Buoey.

Newly promoted Saughall Port are continuing to surprise the division 1 sides and remain top of the table following an emphatic 9-1victory over an albeit weakened Whitby Sports team. Both Paul Arrich and Dave Ash hit maximums for the villagers. Elsewhere in this division Ray Worthington used all his experience to lead Pulford A to an important 6-4 away success at the powerful County Officers A side and he was ably backed up by fellow Halton top division player Dave Southall.

Chester and District Hosing trust are sponsoring the leagues teams in the Lancashire and Cheshire League this season. They have generously provided twenty shirts for our players.

Premier division favourites, Barrow, opened their season with a comprehensive 9- 1 victory over the newly promoted County Officers , whose solitary point came from a fine doubles win. Mike Mercer made a welcome return to the Barrow squad, and played alongside Rob Wylie and new signing Steve Green. Elsewhere Mark Pugh led Corus to a welcome 7 -3 success over a slightly weakened Pulford trio, who nevertheless included Milan Puchala and. Thomas Halucha.

A large number of spectators at Groves last Tuesday witnessed some scintilating and spectacular table tennis as the Chester/Ellesmere Port league held its annual tournament finals.

A G M and presentation evening is now set for Tuesday June 11th at the Groves Club.

CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT

High quality table tennis was witnessed at the Tournament on Sunday when 50 players competed

Neil Powell and Sue Burgess retained the mixed doubles, outpointing Keith Bartlett and Hannah Winfield in the final.

TABLE TENNIS REPORT

The league had representative teams playing in various competitions over the weekend with mixed results.

With the league also taking the Lancs/Cheshire Premier Division title this season the players can be very proud of their efforts.

Over the two weekends Dolder won all his 14 games but was ably backed up at this high level of table tennis by Aaron Beech and Roumanian Florin Barbus, a relative newcomer to our league but a player of high standard as a junior, a few years ago, back in his home country.
