 Colchester Table Tennis stalwart John Welham has died aged 76. He was a former player in the Colchester & District Table Tennis League for over 50 years! John was a member of the Lawford team in 1959, said at the time to be the strongest ever entered in the Colchester League. They won the Division One title on more than one occasion and subsequently John played for; St Botolph’s, Saints, St Mary’s and was current Chairman of the Tollgate Table Tennis Club. John represented the Colchester League and also played in the Ipswich League for Brantham where again, he won a Division One winner’s medal.

John won many titles including five Colchester Mixed Doubles with wife Sue and was runner-up in the 1960 Men’s Singles final to team-mate Allan Cooper, knocking out three times champion John Kellett in the semi-final. He also won the Ipswich Mixed Doubles title with Sue in 1975.

John had a number of other interests including being the lead singer in The John Welham Sound, running a band booking agency - Stour Valley Entertainments as well as a season ticket holder at Colchester UTD FC and a former member of Essex CCC as well as a player for Mistley CC.

After a sudden illness John passed away peacefully on Thursday 6th December in the Colchester General Hospital. He was a caring and kind friend to many and will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife, Sue and son Stuart and four Grandchildren.

John’s funeral will be held at St Mary’s & St Michael’s Church, Mistley on Friday 21stDecember at 2.00pm.
