The University of Essex have opened up an eight point lead in Division Three of the Colchester and District Table Tennis League. However, just seven points covers the next five places making for a very interesting second half of the season. Their latest conquest was a 10-0 whitewashing of lowly Pegasus D with only one game not won in three straight sets. Oliver Pink, Matthew Horrocks and new player Ngo Hin Lam all completing maximums. St James D are second and they matched the UOE result with a resounding 10-0 win over Lawford C. Another debutant, Brian Parish marked his first appearance unbeaten, joined by Russell Hillier and Colin Beaumont. Back-to-back promotions would be impressive for the Clacton based team but Gt Horkesley E are hot on their heels, four points back with a game in hand. This week they were held to a 5-5 draw at Dedham A. Mel Rampton was again the star for Dedham winning his three, beating the returning Lorrie Austin (2 wins) in the process. Rampton averages just shy of 78%, not a bad effort in his first season back. H20 Rowhedge G are fourth, two points further back and will surely miss Jermaine Fearon, now he has won the prerequisite seven games when playing up. He completes his Division Three season unbeaten with three more wins against Tollesbury B in a 7-3 win. Roger Clarke completed a fine win over Josh Sidki, inflicting his first defeat as Clarke won two. Proverbial promotion/relegation specialists Gt Horkesley D are one point back as they inched past Tollesbury 6-4 with no player unbeaten, Rob King had a noteworthy win over Ian Carter but then lost 11-9 in the fifth end to Dave Jones as Tom Lewis joined the trio in a brace of wins. CRGS’s wretched season continues as they lost their ninth game, 9-1 to H20 Rowhedge H with Adam Cuthbert completing his first maximum of the season.
The Gilberd A are clear leaders of Division Four, seven points clear of Tollgate D and these two appear to have their fate in their own hands. Gilberd have the find of the season in Neil Huatan who made it twenty-three straight wins without defeat in an 8-2 win at H20 Rowhedge I. His win over Terry Smyth was Smyth’s first defeat as he became the first player to win two against the school team. Roger Springett’s two wins leave him with 92.3% average. A 9-1 win over Gt Horkesley G for Tollgate D secures them second place, seventeen points clear of Dedham B. Richard Baxter has dropped just three out of twenty-six giving him an 88.5% average and it was Chris Jones who beat him to take Horkesley’s only point. Dedham B won by the same margin with Marlene Smith and Roy Cole undefeated. Lawford D are fourth as they claimed the bragging rights, beating their ‘E’ team 9-1, their sole win coming in the doubles .John Colvin, George Earle and Steve Marr all won three. Likewise Pegasus F beat their ‘G’ team 7-3, Helen Woolnough taking the player-of-the match. The final accolade goes to Gt Horkesley G who beat their ‘F’ team 6-4 despite a valiant effort by Steve Lowe who won his three, taking the last end in all three of his games 12-10.
