Michael Andrews: Good Form for Rowhedge as well as reaching Chelmsford Men's Singles Semi-Finals
Reigning Colchester and District Table Tennis League Division One champions H20 Rowhedge A are not going to relinquish their crown without a fight as their young team beat rivals Gt Horkesley A 6-4. Rowhedge captain Michael Andrews led by example winning his three, including a five set win over Richard Goodhand. He then teamed up with Josh Sidki to win a vital doubles as the teams are now joint third, eight points behind leaders Tollgate A. They had a resounding 10-0 win over bottom team Walton B. Nigel Hodder won three in his first league match since shoulder surgery and was joined by another shoulder injury victim Colin Stallwood and Greg Green, all undefeated. St James A move up to second as they beat Pegasus A 6-4. No single player remained unbeaten with Colin Webber and Felipe Rodriguez winning two for the victors as did Rob Bozier and Ian Whiteside for Pegasus. Previous to this Pegasus had picked up a precious 9-1 win over Walton B, Bozier and Whiteside both going one better in completing maximums. Tollgate B completed the comeback of the week as they fielded only two players and after trailing 5-0 came back to secure a draw. Sue Welham and Martyn Green both won two and combined to win the doubles. Walton A got the better of another two-player team, H20 Rowhedge C 6-4. Walton’s Matt Watson won his two as did Phil Smith for Rowhedge. Smith was in even better form, joining Garry Cattermole, undefeated in a rousing 9-1 defeat of Gt Horkesley B, without the services of Gary Young.
Tollesbury A remain top of Division Two as they beat H20 Rowhedge E 7-3. Once again no player could go through the evening avoiding defeat as Patrick Gilbert, Ben Page and Paul Freeman all won two as did Martin Edwards for Rowhedge. John Owen had a busy night winning only one as all three of his games went the full five set distance! Walton C are two points back and despite only turning out two players beat Lawford B 6-4. David Hall won three, supported by Paul Newbould who won two and the pair won the doubles in five ends. Tollgate C were indebted to late call-up Neil Freeman who won three in an 8-2 over H20 Rowhedge D that sees his team move up to third. St James C recorded their first win of the season 6-4 at H20 Rowhedge F. Chris Brook won three for Rowhedge but highlight of the night was Ferdy Rodriguez’s comeback from 10-1 down to Nigel Claydon in the first end to eventually win in three straight sets! Claydon must have been suffering jet lag following his recent trip to China!
University of Essex moved thirteen points clear at the top of Division Three as they beat H20 Rowhedge H 9-1. Oliver Pink and Nathan Nicol were both undefeated as were all three H20 Rowhedge G players in a 10-0 win over CRGS. Ed Rudge, Daryl Lott and Peter Giles all won without dropping a set!
In Division Four Gilberd A took advantage of Tollgate D’s match against Dedham B being called off with a comprehensive 9-1 win over Pegasus E. Roger Springett took the player-of-the match award with three wins. Lawford D move up to third with an 8-2 success at H20 Rowhedge I. Steve Marr and John Colvin were unbeaten. Chris Jones had a good five-set win over Helen Woolnough to secure a 6-4 win for her Gt Horkesley F team over Pegasus F. Gilberd B and Gt Horkesley F both had 8-2 wins over Pegasus G and Lawford E respectively.
