League Press Report - Week 7

At the beginning of the season, Division One looked to be a very exciting division on paper. Seven weeks in, it doesn’t seem to have disappointed. Tollesbury A played Walton B in a match that could’ve seen Tollesbury move ahead of Walton near the top of the table. The standout performance was by Scott Bills of Tollesbury, winning all of his matches (including the doubles with Tom Lewis) to help the match finish as a stalemate. Paul Meikle came close to beating Bills, who recovered from 2-1 down in sets to win 12-10 in the 5th. This result leaves Walton second in the table, five points in front of Tollesbury having played a game more. Rowhedge E proved too strong for Gt Horkesley B, beating them 8-2. Martin Edwards won all of his games to help Rowhedge move level with Tollesbury.

In Division Two, Tollgate D had a shock result against Lawford B. They lost 6-4, but still stay top of the division by three points, albeit having played a game more than Pegasus C. Richard Spence was in fine form for Lawford, beating every player in four sets. Pegasus C have put pressure on Tollgate for the coveted top spot. They swept aside Gt Horkesley D 9-1 with every Pegasus player winning their singles. The only point they dropped was, surprisingly, in the doubles. Dedham B halted Rowhedge G’s winning run after inflicting a heavy 8-2 victory over them. Tony Watson and George Berry both had maximums and moves Dedham away from the relegation zone. Pegasus D helped their chances of staying up by playing out a 5-5 draw with Gt Horkesley C. Rupesh Harding won all of his matches for Pegasus.

Three points separate the bottom four teams in Division Three. Lawford D are bottom of the pile after losing 9-1 to Pegasus E. Phil Daley was the only player able to pick up a point for Lawford. Dedham D vs. Dedham C finished as a 5-5 draw, which could prove valuable for Dedham D come the end of the season in their hopes of staying up. Rowhedge I move up to third in the table, level on points with Rowhedge H, drawing 5-5 with Gilberd A. Jared Chelski was too strong for the Gilberd players, winning all of his games.

In Division Four, Pegasus H drew 5-5 with Lawford E thanks to Stan Flint’s heroic effort for Pegasus. Steve Marr came closest to beating him, but lost 11-6 in the 5th set. Tollgate E had a good 8-2 win over Gt Horkesley F. Toby Deng and Leon Huang finished the night unbeaten. Gt Horkesley E move closer to Gilberd B at the top of the table after claiming a well-fought 6-4 victory over them. If it wasn’t for Roger Springett winning all of his games for the Gilberd, the result could have been much more in favour for Gt Horkesley.

Only three points separate the top three teams in the Premier Division. Tollgate A are now the current leaders, even though they lost 6-4 to Gt Horkesley A. Jake Collins achieved a maximum for Gt Horkesley. Tollgate B are only two points behind after they thrashed Walton A 8-2. Charlie Fulcher finished the night unbeaten.
