League Press Report - Week 18

Lawford A achieved the bragging rights at the top of Division One after just coming out on top against 2nd placed Pegasus B. The match was finely poised at 5-4 to Lawford just before the last game was played. Steve Noble, on a 12-game unbeaten run before the start of the evening, had already lost his record after losing to Keith Norman in the first game. After also losing to Michael Emmerson, he wanted to make amends by giving his team the vital point needed for a draw. However, Robert Wood was a bit too strong for Noble, beating him 11-9 in the fourth set. The match ended 6-4 in Lawford’s favour and extends their lead at the top of the table to 6 points. At the other end of the table, St James C gave themselves a much needed win to increase their chances of survival by beating Rowhedge F 9-1. Lajos Zsisku achieved Rowhedge’s sole point of the evening by beating Ian Fielder in the last game. There were two 10-0 matches in the division last week. Walton A thrashed Tollesbury A who only managed to win three sets throughout the entire evening, whilst Gt Horkesley B beat Rowhedge E by the same scoreline. Only three games were won in three sets, so it could have been a very different picture if Rowhedge finished off their chances.

A busy schedule took place in Division Two. Tollgate D recorded a very strong win (8-2) over Lawford B to almost guarantee themselves promotion to the next tier. Steve Scholz fine form continued by winning all of his games for Tollgate. Tollesbury B moved ahead of Lawford into 2nd place after drawing 5-5 with Rowhedge G. Colin Barrell proved too strong for Rowhedge’s players, but 13-year old Jared Chelski won his first two games of playing in a higher division. Gt Horkesley D picked up four valuable points against Pegasus C in their tough fight to stay in the division. Ian Carter achieved a maximum for Gt Horkesley. Rowhedge G’s first match of the week ended in another 5-5 draw. Their opponents, Dedham B, could only unfortunately turn up with two players. However, this did not distract George Berry from helping Dedham end the evening with a draw, as he won all of his games. Pegasus D had a good victory over Gt Horkesley C (6-4). Alistair Woodcock won all of his games for Pegasus.

In Division Four, Gt Horkesley E moved to within 5 points of the top spot thanks to a 7-3 victory over Gilberd B. Olly Fifield won all of Gilberd’s points on the night. Tollgate E beat Gt Horkesley F 9-1; Rob Mitchell achieved Gt Horkesley’s only point by beating John Deng in four sets. Lawford E beat Pegasus H 7-3, with Steve Marr winning all of his games for Lawford.

Tollgate A beat Gt Horkesley A 6-4 in a game that had the potential to give either team the upper-hand in the quest to become champions. Andy Warner won all of his games for Tollgate, even though Paul Broxton took him the full distance only to lose 11-9 in the 5th. Two-manned Rowhedge A beat Pegasus A 6-4, with Jermaine Fearon achieving a maximum for Rowhedge.
