Tollgate A set the pace in the Premier Division

The 2016/17 season in the Colchester & District Table Tennis League has begun, and Tollgate A seem to have started this season just as they ended the last. What better way to do it than against one of their rival title challengers, Rowhedge A? On paper, it seemed like it was going to be an extremely close match, but Tollgate came out on top winning 8-2. Trevor Lloyd and Colin Stallwood won all of their games against the side which contained Gary Cattermole, Richard Hutchinson and Mark Wicker. Rowhedge B beat Tollgate B 7-3 thanks to a fine maximum from John Andrews. Gracie Edwards did well playing for her new team in the top tier by beating Chester Chung. Pegasus A beat newly promoted Lawford A 6-4. Ian Whiteside won all of his matches for Pegasus. St James B made a good start to the season after beating Walton A 7-3. The brother pairing of of Sam and Paul Hume were both too strong for Walton, winning all their games.

In Division One, Rowhedge C are the early pacesetters after a very good 9-1 victory over Tollgate C. Neil Freeman bagged Tollgate’s only point of the evening. Tollesbury A hope to have a more successful season than last and got off to a winning start beating St James C 7-3. Bryan Speller got man-of-the-match for Tollesbury. Tollgate D matched this score line by beating Lawford B 7-3. Steve Scholz achieved a hat trick of wins. Rowhedge D overcame Walton B by one game (6-4 win) in a very tight contest. A new player for Rowhedge this season, Abhi Peshkar, showed his talent by beating a strong Walton side that finished 3rd last time around.

In Division Two, Lawford C only just missed out on promotion last season and will be hoping they get those few extra points needed to take them to the next tier. They have made a successful start by beating Dedham A 7-3. Paul Hewitt won all three of his games for Lawford. Rowhedge E beat Pegasus B 6-4 thanks to a maximum from Lajos Zsisku. St James D achieved a 6-4 win over Tollesbury B, however no player won all of their games. The result was the same between Gt Horkesley B and Rowhedge F, with Gt Horkesley coming out on top. Steve Holland ended the night unbeaten for Gt Horkesley. Tollgate E beat Rowhedge G 6-4, even with Jared Chelski winning all his matches for Rowhedge.

Pegasus C take an early lead in Division Three after beating Gt Horkesley C 9-1. Hazel Hume gained Gt Horkesley’s sole point of the evening. Tollgate G had a strong victory over Dedham B by beating them 8-2. Brothers Leon Huang and Andy Huang walked away unbeaten in what could be a very successful season for the youngsters of this Tollgate team after gaining promotion from Division Four. Gt Horkesley D beat Pegasus D 6-4, with Steve Holland on fine form again winning all his matches. Gilberd A drew 5-5 with St James E as one of the star performers from Division Four last season, Olly Fifield, won all three of his matches for the Gilberd.

Division Four hasn't been included as there had been no fixtures recorded on the website at the time of writing this report.
