After two months of having a break, the season has now entered the second half. What better way to start it off than the top two teams in the Premier Division fighting it out to gain an advantage in the race for the title. The first game looked to be the most exciting on paper. It featured ex-Colchester Men’s champion, Rik James, and a player who was unbeaten this season on 20 games, Colin Stallwood. However, it was James who came out on top, beating Stallwood in four sets. Rowhedge raced into a 3-1 lead, only for Tollgate to then win the next 5 games and ensure they had the victory. The match ended 6-4 to Tollgate and puts them 14 points clear of Rowhedge. Lawford A had an excellent 5-5 draw with Pegasus A to keep their hopes alive of remaining in the division. Ian Whiteside achieved a maximum for Pegasus. Tollgate B and Rowhedge B also drew 5-5.
In Division One, Tollgate D move top thanks to an 8-2 victory over Lawford B. Sue Welham and Martin Hogg won all of their games. St James C recorded a fine 9-1 win against Tollesbury A. Andy Vincent and John Barton were unbeaten at the end of the evening. This result leaves Tollesbury A in serious danger of being relegated.
Another battle near the top of the table occurred in Division Two this week. It was Tollgate E who were victorious against Rowhedge G, beating them 6-4. A mention has to go out to Jared Chelski of Rowhedge who extended his unbeaten record to 30 straight wins. Richard Baxter took him extremely close and should have broken Chelski’s record after being 2-0 up in sets. However, Chelski won the next three sets to keep his record alive for another week. What a season he is having! Rowhedge E recorded a 9-1 victory over Pegasus B. David Harrison and Ed Rudge won all their games. Rowhedge F beat Gt Horkesley B 7-3. Pawel Szemro and Mark Glenister both achieved maximums for Rowhedge. Lawford C beat Dedham A 7-3 with Paul Hewitt ending the night unbeaten. These results leave Rowhedge E, Rowhedge F, Lawford C, Rowhedge G and Tollgate E separated by only 5 points at the top of the table. Eight games remaining…
Tollgate F maintain their lead at the top of Division Three after beating Pegasus E 10-0. Tollgate G matched this result against Dedham B to give themselves hope that their sister team can be caught before the end of the season. Gt Horkesley D won 6-4 against Pegasus D, with Janet Faiers willing all of her games.
In Division Four, Lawford D beat Gt Horkesley E 6-4. Charlie Morris-Denholm achieved a maximum for Lawford D. Tollgate H had a 6-4 victory over Pegasus G, with Ken Huang ending the night unbeaten.
