The Warwickshire County Junior trials took place at Lawrence Sherriff school in Rugby on Sunday September 7th.
Twelve boys entered the Junior Boys event and were initially divided into two groups. Lillington Free Church’s Timmy Cooper won the first of these, though he was taken to 5 by runner-up Paul Lilley of Rugby.
Colebridge’s Sam Henderson won the other group from Church’s Lee Dorning though the most entertaining clash was arguably the one between Henderson and Sam Weaving (Free Church) which contained many spectacular, long attacking rallies in the 5 games.
In the semi-final round Henderson beat Lilley 3-0 and Cooper beat Dorning in 5, before falling in straight games to Henderson.
In the 3rd/4th play-off Dorning eclipsed Lilley 3-0.
The top 3 cadets, Lisa Rinnhofer of Colebridge and Jenny and Katie Singleton, both of Free Church, joined Rugby’s Milly Bradshaw and Church duo Eve Briscoe and Olivia Fletcher in theJunior Girls’ trial, with the results of the earlier cadet trial being taken into account. Fletcher was unbeaten, though 3 of her matches went to 5, and is the County’s top girl. In fact nearly half the matches went to 5. Rinnhofer nailed second spot and Bradshaw the third.
A few years ago there were barely any girls competing for the County team so it was a delight to see so many girls of such a high standard transforming County chances.
The Under 15 boys’ trial was split into two preliminary groups of 4. Adam Cofler and Lewis Singleton, both of Free Church, were first and second in one with Sam Cafearo and Bradley Matthews, both Rugby, qualifying from the other group. The Final group saw Cofler emerge as the County number one, Cafearo at two and Matthews at three.
The Under 15 Girls trial was contested by the strongest contingent of girls for a very long time with all 7 girls playing really competitive matches against one another.
Colebridge’s Lisa Rinnhofer was top winning all her matches including a thrilling deuce in the fifth victory over Church’s Katie Singleton. Katie also lost deuce in the fifth to club mate Jenny Singleton which consequently resulted in Jenny finishing second and Katie third. It was good to see Emma Kilpatrick playing after a lengthy absence through injury and she finished a highly commendable 4th.
Robbie Fitchford’s greater experience told in the Under 13 Boys’ trials which he won convincingly. Free Church club-mate Sebastian Priest secured the second ranking with Rugby’s Jack Turner 3rd.
