Sussex over 60s off to a flying start

In the first weekend of the over 60s county championships at Milton Keynes the Sussex team of Johnny Clarke,Barrie Gilbert,new boy Phil Smith and Sheila King won their first three matches to finish joint top on six pointswith Yorkshire and Cheshire.

In the first match against newly promoted Middlesex JC beat Chris Pickard and Geoff Grange,Gilbert beat Pickard and Gennari and Smudger beat Grange and Gennari.Sheila surprisingly lost the ladies singles and the mixed and mens doubles were all won,9-1 to Sussex.

In the afternoon match versus Kent Sheila had a fine victory over Diane Pearce,Barrie beat Keith Clark and Roger Pingram,Phil lost to Roger and beat Dave Davies,JC beat Davies and conceded through injury to Clark,one mixed doubles was lost,7-3 to Sussex.

On Sunday JC had to concede against Peter Radford with the score 1-1 in games,Phil beat Dave Bowles and Barrie beat Stuart Gibbs.The first mixed was won and then Phil went down to Radford in four.Sheila lost narrowly to Gill Lock to leave the sides locked at 3-3.Sussex then raised their game winning the mens doubles and mixed and Barrie beating Dave Bowles and JC defeating Stuart. 7-3 to Sussex.

So a very successful weekend and another four matches to come in March the team are already safe for another season in the Premier.
