Come along to Derby’s one year to go celebration for the London 2012 Olympics. Wednesday 27 July 2011 which marks exactly one year to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London and a celebration of the hosting of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be taking place in the city.

The Market Place will be transformed into a vibrant space with sports demonstrations, dance and music performances. A tempting selection of things to do in Derby will be on offer - you can try out a new activity in the run up to the Olympics, meet Donna Kellogg, former Olympic badminton player, and take your pick from lots of activities including athletics, gymnastics, workouts (Shakespearian style), drumming, bunting making, rowing and even making up your own Olympic sport!

Derby’s International Cultural Festival banners, a Lottery funded partnership project between School Sports Partnerships and Leisure and Cultural Services, will be on display for the first time, showing how 17 secondary schools in the city have been working with artists from different countries. A film of young people’s sports and arts work will be screened for the first time on the Big Screen alongside ‘magic moments‘ from London celebrating this special day.

The event will start at 10am and is expected to finish at 7.00pm. The Mayor of Derby, Les Allen, will open the event at 10am together with Donna Kellogg.
