Championship Summary Press Release

Several players reach table tennis finals night

On Sunday at Hartismere High School in Eye, the Diss & District Table Tennis League, held its annual championships with the finalists due to go to battle in the finals night at Palgrave Village Hall on Saturday evening, commencing 7:30pm with the Open Singles semi-finals. 
The day started with the handicap singles that was played on a knock-out basis. Emerging and both new players to the premier division this season saw Scott Boast (+9) beat Alan Worthington (+11) and Dan Taylor (+11) beat John Bryant (+8) make it through to the final. 
The Open Singles was played initially in 8 groups with winner and runner-up proceeding to knock-out stages. All seeded players reached the quarter finals but only two of the top 4 reached the semi-finals. James Skilleter (1) beat Paul Mortlock (8) 11-3, 11-7, 11-6 and will play Ian Brown (7) who beat Lewis Taylor (4) 12-10, 11-6, 11-8. Stephen Stolworthy (3) beat Chris Jones (5) 11-7, 9-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3 and will play Phil Waity (6) who beat John Monk (2) 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 14-12. 
The First Division Singles was played in 2 groups with Alan Worthington (1) beating Gary Cook (2) 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-1 and Pat West (4) beat Richard Pursehouse (3) 12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8.
The finals night will also have a Ladies final with Pat West playing Booan Temple. 
The other events were age restricted. In the Over 18s/Under 40s, Lewis Taylor easily got past Dan Taylor and will play Scott Boast who had great win 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10 over Phil Waity. 
The Over 40s was played on a round robin group where Steve Stolworthy will meet James Skilleter, the Over 50s sees John Monk play Chris Jones and in the Over 60s, Ian Brown plays Francis Webb. 
The day ended with the Open Doubles event played out a knock out basis. Last years winners Steve Stolworthy & Trevor Cottee made it through to the final comfortably beating Chris Jones & David Mortlock in their semi final 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7. Meanwhile the pairing of Ian Brown & Dan Taylor were quietly making progress. They removed John Monk & Andy Doe before meeting James Skilleter & Lewis Taylor in the semi-final which went the distance. 4 legs were shared but they soon found themselves 9-4 up and coasting before the Palgrave Tornadoes pair dug in to win 6 points in a row before the leg went to deuce. As the momentum was with Skilleter/Taylor, they got over the line 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 4-11, 12-10. 
Anyone interested in playing table tennis socially or as part of a team in the league are welcome to the leagues weekly practise evenings on Tuesdays at Diss High School. Juniors 6-7 and Seniors 7-9.
