Amy so close to National Title

15-year-old Amy Humphreys was the closest yet to winning her first Individual National title at the recent National Schools Championships held at Doncaster. Draycott’s leading Junior player had qualified for the event by winning the Nottinghamshire’s Under 16 Schools title and was seeded 5 for the National finals.

Amy started well winning all five of her group matches including

a 3-1 win over her Draycott Junior British League squad player –

Isabelle Joubeily (Sy) to reach the last 16. She next faced

Lancashire’s Amy Hutchins and this was a tight battle as Hutchins

refused to give up as she forced her higher ranked opponent

to a deciding end but Humphreys held her nerve to squeeze

home in the 5th end.

In the Q/F Amy defeated 4th seed Jasmin Johns 3-1 setting up

a semi-final match against another JBL squad player – Kate

Nixon (Y)

Amy started poorly as Kate raced to 2-0 lead and at 7-4 down

in the 3rd end her coach Phil Vickers called a decisive time out

which changed the course of the match as Amy took the 3rd

end and then ran out a 3-2 winner.

In the final Amy faced top seed Emily Bolton and despite

winning the first end 11-6 Amy had to settle for the silver

medal as Emily took advantage in next three tight ends to

win 3-1                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Amy Humphreys (Nottinghamshire)

Other Draycott players were also in action at Doncaster where Molly Hancock (Under 11 Girls), Poww Boonyaprapa (U/11 Boys), Naphat Boonyaprapa (Under 13 Boys), Alex Ramsden (U/16 Boys), Michael Bree (Under 19 Boys) all won their five group matches before being defeated at the Q/F stage.

JBL Girls squad player – Olivia Churchill (Li) went one stage further to reach the semi final losing to the eventual winner - Yuki Wat (Mi)

Other JBL Girls squad players – Kate Cheer (Sx) was runner-up in the U/13 girls with Bhavika Mistry (Np) reaching the semi-final.
