Semi Final handicap Cup

Lanchester A V Chargers

The game played on a neutral venue at Silksworth was an entertaining match with some very close games.

Max Duffin got off to an excellent start for Chargers by beating Lanchester’s Number 1 in three very close games with no more than 4 points in any game.

The next game was Liam Ord for Lanchester against Terry Charlton who couldn’t get into his attacking game and went down in 2 ends . Thaquib Saleem disposed of Peter Whitfield in the third game using his loop attack tp good effect to give Lanchester a 2-1 lead.

Max against Liam was along drawn out affair with both players resorting to chop defence to wait for mistakes . This proved the wrong ploy for max who lost the first end 22-20 but by changing to a more attacking game and forcing the ball onto Liam’s backhand he ran away in the next 2 ends to take the score to 2-2 .

Peter was up against Davy McAllister  and with only a 5 start struggled against Davy’s serve and 3rd  ball attack in the first end and went down by 7 points. The second game was a different affair with Peter concentrating on playing the ball short to avoid Davys drive and took the end 21-18, the third game went to a similar plan and with Peter 20-18 up it looked as if he might beat the Lanchester number 1,  but Davy drove Peter back in the next four points to take the final end 22-20.

Thaquib against Terry was  a similar game with Thaquib taking the first game 21-15 with all out attack with  Terry playing more to his backhand in the second to come back  and take it 22-20 but Thaquib dominated the third to run with a victory. Peter needed to win his game aganst Liam tyo keep the Chargers in the match and after losing the first he ran away with the second and look as if he might be on track to take the third but Liam buckled down to his task playe shore whne reuired and attacked when appropriate to finish off victorious giving Lanchester A the match and a final against either Aces or Bombers.

Handicap Cup Semi Finals

Bombers v Aces

Sacriston have had a good season so far with the Aces establishing themselves as a force in the First division. Bombers are within a whisker of promotion out of the second division and awaiting other results.  Chargers have come a very creditable third in the third division and the Desperadoes and Eagles have acquitted themselves as relative newcomers to league action. The club had three teams reach the semi-final’s of the cup and with Chargers being beaten by Lanchester Table Tennis club in the first Semi-final, it was down to the game between Bombers and Aces as to who would be playing them. Aces were without their number one player and with only three players left, played the attacking Ian McAllister with the reliable Jon Mawson and the club secretary Duncan Fraser who always gives solid performances but was hampered by having to play with an injured wrist. Bombers have a larger squad and could select the Young Dan Hutchinson who is making a name for himself as a real talent in the league. Lee Maher the dark horse of the team who always puts in a solid performance and regular Dan Nicholson.

The handicapping certainly favoured the Bombers and with an injured player Aces struggled in all the games. Only Jon Mawson managed an end in his game with Dan Nicholson but the Bombers piled the pressure on and won 5-0 to progress to the final at St Chad’s on Wednesday April 1st

Best of luck to the Bombers

It has been decided to enter 5 teams in The Northumbrian Summer League.

There will be some movement of players between the teams as the summer league needs more players for each team with summer holidays taking its toll on player attendance.
