17th FEBRUARY 2015 MATCH REPORT

In Division One of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League the leaders Bristol Nomads were held 18-18 by YMCA who had the player of the match in Ray Goulding who won all his matches.

With the leaders dropping points this gave an opportunity to the 2nd and 3rd placed teams, Cwmbran Aztecs and Cwmbran Blues, to close the gap. It was the Aztecs came out on top 20-16 as the Blues could not overcome the absence of their number two player Mark Farrow. Player of the match was Tony Collins of the Aztecs who won all his matches including the usual close game against the Blues number one David Lloyd.

With the leaders of Division Two, Cwmbran Dynamos, having a bye week, their main rivals were given an opportunity to close the points gap. Cwmbran Panthers took full advantage with a very good win 25 - 6 against Blaenavon Bulldogs who were strengthened by the inclusion of two players from the Blaenavon Aces side to cover unavailability. Although the Panthers Mike Blatchford was the player of the match, special mention should also go to his team mate Yuri Cherkasenko who also won all his matches, including a win against the higher ranked Ben Pearce. The Panthers are the new leaders of Division Two, but have played a game more than the Dynamos.

The other side trying to close the gap on the leaders were Blaenavon Aces who included the unbeaten Jonathan Allen in their match against Cwmbran Devils. The Aces had their expected comfortable win 22-7, but the Devils' Stan Williams made them fight all the way with 2 wins against the higher ranked Pearce brothers Mathew and Ben and taking a set off Jonathan Allen.

The final match of the night was between Cwmbran Eccentrics and Cwmbran Fellows and due to player unavailability there was only one 'normal' player representing each side. However, it was the Fellows replacements that proved too strong for the Eccentrics substitutes and won 17-13, with the Fellows' Alex Jones proving the match winner.
